Coronavirus - Overall

All the restrictions came into effect here yesterday at noon. The nightly news showing people still not taking it seriously police were berating people in the street sending people home and closing shops, that thought the rules didn't apply to them.
Here in the countryside its not as much of a disruption but still noticeably less traffic around today.
I've seen people describe the majority of these people as the 'new-French'. Any truth in that or is it across the board?

@No-Quarter That is fear propaganda if ever I've read it.
8-15% of people over 70 will die in the US. Well, what percentage of them would die on any normal year?
Twitter, once again, proving itself to be the worst fucking thing on this entire planet.
Oh it's definitely a "worst case scenario" situation which is very unlikely to unfold. The stat you quote there is what would happen if the States did absolutely nothing, which was never going to be the case.
It's a little bit like the climate change stuff. The unlikely worst case scenario is tabled and gets the most attention as that is what would concern people the most, but in reality it is unlikely to ever eventuate.
It's hit Italy hard, other countries not so much. Very difficult to predict but the one thing we know for sure is people isolating does work and really helps our health system cope with the increased demand.

@Victor-Meldrew Taiwan had 24 cases yesterday. South Korea still under 100.
Those numbers are insignificant compared to Europe which is clearly the current epicentre.
Lots of small waves that your health system can cope with is probably the best case scenario.

Appears to be a few anomalies in the data. Germany have 12,327 cases and 28 deaths, Spain have 14,769 cases and 638 deaths. I can only assume that Germany/Korea with mass testing are identifying way more mild cases therefore the death rate is substantially lower.
The flipside to this is if Spain have 638 deaths its likely they have more like 100,000+ odd cases in the population. Italy likely have many more than the reported number.

Just out of curiosity for those financial types. How do Airlines, Tourism Business, Pubs, Restaurants etc secure funding once this is done. Wont they be deemed high risk making it very difficult or expensive to get credit. Will most Airlines become Govt owned?

Out of interest for those that think this is fear propaganda, how do you see this unfolding? How does this end or how do we go back to normal?

Think you might have something there.
Also, someone from Cambridge University was explaining that testing for Coronavirus is in it's infancy. There's trade-off between accuracy and the time taken to analyse sample.

Really hope you are right.

I am sure this website has been posted before, but if you want to look at live updates:
I'm pretending the country analysis is the Olympic medal table. More fun that way 😃
I thought I was the only one! You can even order it by per-capita...just like the nz media at olympic time

No surprise he's staying away from crowds - he's in the demographic at risk. Spring Breakers should just stay away from their grandparents.

@pakman Unfortunately clinical trials performed in China are considered unreliable.
Doctors in Japan are using the same drug in clinical studies on coronavirus patients with mild to moderate symptoms, hoping it will prevent the virus from multiplying in patients.
But a Japanese health ministry source suggested the drug was not as effective in people with more severe symptoms. “We’ve given Avigan to 70 to 80 people, but it doesn’t seem to work that well when the virus has already multiplied,” the source told the Mainichi Shimbun.

I also wonder if this has something to do with how you determine cause of death.
Here in Australia they have described a few people dying 'with coronavirus' rather than 'of coronavirus'. Those cases were 90+ year olds who may have already been sick, so it's a bit hard to tell exactly what caused their death.
So if you took a more cautious approach to recording virus deaths in the very elderly, you could come away with a lower figure.
