Coronavirus - New Zealand

After calming down a bit I assume this will be a blip, and perhaps a necessary blip, but it still pisses me off to no end that this was allowed to happen. Potentially risking lives of untold numbers due to an oversight after all the hard work to eliminate it.

This is like Tonga winning the RWC, then ruining it by players getting caught weeing all over the trophy after a few drinks.
All NZ's feel-good triumph over covid jeopardised by a lackadaisical overseas arrival policy. Did they not learn something from the initial cases brought in from overseas?
My cousin died suddenly at the height of covid, family was restricted to 10 guests (when the the church would normally have been overflowing), and his brother in Brisbane couldn't attend.
Meanwhile, an exemption is granted to 2 people returning from one of the world's major covid hotspots.
Not impressed.

These two ladies were one of many exemptions apparently. If we dodge a bullet here it won't be through skill or smarts, just dumb luck
-
@mofitzy_ yea I'm hoping it is a blip and turns out to be nothing more than the kick up the arse the Govt needs to ensure they keep out borders tight.
Yes they told us to expect more cases, but we expected these in our quarantine facilities from recent arrivals, which proves they are managing our borders properly, but incidents such as this prove things are not where they should be.

I get that they can drive that distance on a tank of gas, my old holden can do so.
I get they can be prepared and have food and water for the trip so not having to stop.I don't get that there is one, let alone two women on this planet that can drive all that way with out having to go to the toilet..... twice!!
If it is proven that they stopped and went to the toilet in the forest or something then we don't have a lot to worry about (except the incompetence of letting them go in the first place)
I am very sceptical that they didn't use a public facility or a friends place on the way down.

Well yeah, but really when you apply for your exemption and say you won't need fuel and won't need to stop for fuel...but if you do you'll just piss on the side of the road...what official is signing that off?
Be interesting as to how they acquired any supplies if they did too.

A family member dropped a car off to them. I'm sure the official story will be that it was fully supplied

We were told to treat everybody as if they had Covid - including ourselves - and yet when 2 people actually have it we let them roam the countryside. Crass stupidity.
Meanwhile this one slipped through almost unnoticed

FFS I want to see someone's head on a pike. And these two teens can fuck off back where they came from. Regardless of if they are NZ citizens or not

There was an ex Radio NZ journo interviewed on Morning Report today. She is managed isolation at the Novotel Akl Airport.
What she had to say was very disturbing. Everything from the moment she touched down has been very organised and professional. Temperature taken and an in depth interview before getting to immigration. Everyone socially distancing. Taken to a conference facility at the hotel for more screening asked questions about dietary requirements etc. Every day they have to answer questions about their health and they are tested twice whilst in managed isolation. Hotel staff in full PPE and social distancing at all times. Communication very clear. A thoroughly professional set up.
However - Air NZ FFS.
She flew London - Melbourne on Emirates. One passenger per row - you had to wear a mask at all times - even when asleep. If the mask slipped you would be woken to adjust it. Stewardesses in full PPE throughout.
Contrast this with ANZ on the Melbourne - Akl leg. Plane was a code share with every seat occupied. No social distancing. Effectively a pre-COVID flight. Stewards had no PPE and when asked confirmed that when they land they go home to their families with no restrictions at all. So the cabin staff on the flight with the two new cases could have been sitting next to you for a couple of hours at Eden Park, at the table adjacent at the café or standing in the queue with you at the shops.
This is happening every day and is IMO an even greater risk than the two women who escaped quarantine
-
Well these two pairs of fucktards have stuffed up any degree of leniency or personal responsibility around exemptions. But they've also highlighted that we clearly have issues around how we are managing this. If we don't learn from this lesson and go militant on running our isolation systems then wtf. We just can't leave this up to personal responsibility and a light touch.
-
Re the two women, I don't believe for a second they didn't stop at least once for the loo, or a coffee or food. Even with snacks and water, sometimes you just need something more substantial. And that's a long drive.
Re the teens aka selfish little shits, I am completely happy for the govt to go full dragon on those who flout quarantine rules. We cannot manage anything on hope and luck. No overseas folk can mess up our level one. The good of five million should always overrule the good of one, can you even imagine the shit that would hit the fan if we had to return to a higher level cos of an exemption granted without decent, robust systems in place.

@JC agree, but i do wonder how many layers exist between the PM and Bloomers and who is running the show on the ground.
Bloomfield's job then is to either cut through those layers, or to ensure competency throughout layers managing quarantine given he's their overall boss. There's no more acute health system issue at the moment, and yet Ministry of Health processes have more holes than the Titanic.

@Virgil I heard our glorious leader this morning. Tight lipped anger was how I would describe it. Not at all fluffy. More FFS you fluffybunnies this is the last thing I need right now.
It doesn't dispel the idea that she is surrounded by idiots. These are the tip of the iceberg, just the ones we get to hear about. I'm sure the reality is far more horrifying
