Just watched part of the debate.
God, what a choice the US voter has between the two candidates. A shouty idiot buffoon who thinks personal insults equate to policy & leadership or Donald Trump
Question Time/PMQ etc in Westminster systems has been knocked in recent times for becoming too theatrical and redundant but this US election really underscores the value of it for political discourse.
Trump has his own style; but there is no way he would be able to manage it. Biden in his current state would be shown up as a minister forget the PM.

Had a bit of a look at it last night, lasted 10 minutes then thought , WTF am i watching this ?
I think the pro trump crowd will stay the same, they will love their man more , for taking on two people ,
And the trump haters will stay the same ,they will hate him more for being an arrogant prick ,
in other words , nothing has changed

Proud Boys are pretty happy “Proud Boys, Stand back and stand by...But someone has to do something about Antifa.”
Think he kind of fluked that, moderator tried to coax Trump into saying them and militia patriot groups are white supremacists. Could have very easily lost support there. No doubt the headlines will be "Trump refuses to denouce white supremacist groups"
Correct, almost word for word.
Biden is very very old. I'll be honest - I'd be voting Trump. Purely on age. Not because Biden is 3 years older than Trump, because Biden comes across about 25 years older than Trump. And Trump doesn't come across young.
On that do you consider the VP candidates?
How do you rate Kamala? Do you vote Biden expecting her to take over?
Not really in my train of thought that. Ultimately you are voting for a party, with a figurehead person.
There is certainly a deeply flawed argument that Trump is the best Republican candidate, but that exact same argument applies to the democrats.
Voting on the VP candidates shows just how incredibly poor the top candidates are.
My point is more along the lines of how long Joe may last in the jib.
An undecided voter may be swayed by the possibility of President Harris.

Besides, would I want most 70 year olds I meet or know in positions of great power and responsibility? Hell no!
Would this also apply to most under 70s? (it would for me)
Yes. But do most 75 year olds have the mental acuity and the stamina to be POTUS? Biden is 77, Trump is a more obese 74

I think even Diane Abbott would expose Biden.
The man plagiarized a Neil Kinnock speech FFS and his "Build Back Better" slogan seems to have copied from Boris Johnson.
-
@Victor-Meldrew yeah I was thinking US Presidents always seemed 'old' by comparison to other world leaders, based on nothing other than gut feel!

Piers Morgan is spot on. Biden was doddery, rude and not always coherent. Wallace was inept, like a supply teaching who has lost control of the class.
But Trump was truly shameful. So bad. Not just in his constant rumblings, incessant interuptions and repeated porkies, but in goading on White Supremacist militia. A low point for the US Presidency for many decades.
Biden was vulnerable last night. He is not a good speaker or debater. Trump could have been Mr Funny as he was in the Republican primaries in 2016 or Mr Charming as he was in the first debate against Hillary Clinton. What we got last night was Mr Desperate, Mr Repellent, a lame imitation of Heath Ledger's interpretation of The Joker. I expect Biden to have the biggest Presidential win since 1988.

It always annoys me when the Democrats throw out the good people on both sides lie, making it sound like he was talking about the nazis. In short, he was saying there "good" people there on both sides to protest the taking down of the statue. Then he pointed out both groups also had troublemakers. This is what he said about the white nationalists;
"And you had people -- and I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists -- because they should be condemned totally."
What a Nazi!
Here is the full transcript, it shows very clearly the point he was trying to make (and how hard the reporter was working to twist the narrative)
Trump had an easy line here which he didn't take. All he had to say is that he condemned the white nationalists at the time, fake news just doesn't report it. People could have looked it up and it would have strengthed his fake news mantra.

the good people on both sides lie
I was astounded at how poorly Trump failed at that moment. It's an obvious lie, it's been repeated for years and it was in Biden's campaign launch video.
It was clearly going to come up. He did not coherently push back on that and made no attempt to correct Wallace and Biden when asked for a response.

There is nothing in their goading on White Supremacist militia. In the context of being asked to denounce right wing groups (which he said he was happy to do), he asked for a name and in his inarticulate manner told them to stand down.
To see more in that sentence, you have to have bought into the Trump is racist/white supremacist lie.

Yeah, he completely failed that moment.

Not only did he fail to condemn White Supremacits. He said nearly all the violence was coming from the far left (not true) and told a far right White Supremacist group to "stand by". Shameful.
Most sane people I know tell Neo-Nazis and racists to f##k off.
-
@Rembrandt The Proud Boys are Gavin McInnes' lot. He has made appalling remarks against Black people, Asians and Jews on many occasions. He advocates violence against his opponents.
The FBI have identified them as a extremist, White Nationalist group. They have been linked to the violence in Berkeley in 2017.

Good example of how politics is in the US right now. People just see what they want to see.
I posted above the transcript of Trump denouncing white supremacists, and even the clip you posted he's telling Proud Boys to "stand down" (See I can take words out of context too!).
