Further to this: the lessons learned from assailants who are on various chemical substances suggest that even two rounds might not be enough. Particularly as civil jacketed ammo can occasionally go straight through a target with little stopping power. If they're juiced up, you might need to go again.

Correct, again Police harp on about the old days. Much easier to restrain drunks than P freaks.

And that is why police are trained to fire until the threat is no longer there.

Shooting someone is strictly a lethal use of force option. Despite the point made above that handguns are inaccurate you would also have a hard time justifying why you deliberately shot someone in the leg.

In the US where the cops use guns all the time & train with them there are endless accounts of cops firing 40 or 50 shots, often at stationary targets & missing. One a while ago a bunch of cops fired 150 shots at a couple in a car. Stationary. One cop stood on the bonnet & & fired thru the windcreen (ie he was about 5 feet from the not moving "bad" guys. Around 70% of the shots missed. It is hard as balls to shoot anything with a pistol.

Anytime anyone uses the "aim for the leg!" thing on one of these I automatically think "well, now I know you're retarded so its good we got that out of the way early"

The original Dirty Harry was pretty gritty and realistic overall but they got the stadium bit really wrong that's for sure.

Can't find it online but a few years ago there was video footage of a bunch of cops ( pretty sure it was in NZ) outside a domestic incident.
The guy inside set his dog on the cops they all shot at it as it ran towards them past them, they all fucken missed. Then it ran back, they all fired again at it and all missed again!
Would have been 4 or 5 guys

anyone else wondering how the feck 4 AOS guys - kitted up to all hell and well trained... can get shot with a shot gun and then a .22?

were they ambushed? every cop entry i've seen they go in guns up and ready but it sounds like didn't even get any shots off.

seems a bit odd.

might be tied in with the report i read saying the plane just heard shots. they may have just been door knocking or something. Maybe they thought the shots did come from shooting range and they weren't really expecting anything to go down.

regardless the family are fcuktards for saying it wasn't him shooting at the plane.. that is completely irrelevant anyway cause it's no excuse for shooting at some cops!

Well they're human and they wouldn't know the area like the offender, think of every time you walk into a new house and you take a second or two to get your bearings. Now think of having a fraction of that time in an extremely volatile situation. Doesn't really compare. Four getting hit and none of them dying is extremely fortuitous though, back in the 1940s the same happened and all of them died in an incident which got the NZ AOS set up immediately afterwards in case such events happened again.

NZ is lucky, in our entire history there's still only 29 cops killed in the line of duty. That's a stat to be proud of even if one was a relative of mine.

Regarding pistol accuracy I've fired a glock at the range and I'm a fairly decent shot, much better with a shotgun or rifle though. One analogy one bloke made to me was how easy it is to answer questions on Who wants to be a millionaire while sitting on the couch at home, it's another thing entirely to do it under pressure. As for all that Gangsta N*ga movie shit of holding the gun sideways you'd be fucken lucky to hit a door from a metre or two away.

Everyone is thanks to the difference in barrel lengths.

For most people, if the target is >10m away, they're better off throwing the pistol.

You're the exception then, I'm sure you could put a round through a fleas ass from 200 metres even under periods of extreme stress.

I've shot a browning at a range and was wondering if I could hit myself if I turned it on myself. I geuss it would be effective if I was being attacked in a cupboard, but then again, I'd still miss.

I regularly fire a glock and I can assure you SammyC you don't want to be doing it for real at much over ten metres. And that is if the nice man trying to kill you kindly stays in the one spot long enough for you to hit him.
