So justice is served, and Minneapolis can be riot free, right?
Everything I have read, which is the bulk of the stuff posted here, indicates to me that the 3rd degree murder and manslaughter charges are entirely appropriate. The 2nd degree charge is more debatable I guess.
Assuming any appeal is dismissed, this guy is going to need to be in isolation for his entire prison sentence. It's effectively life over for him.
None of it is debatable. It went through the court, a jury gave a verdict. That's the system. I'm not disagreeing with anything, just playing the whistle
Now, how can the rioting be eased? And the argument of was Chauvin racist is far from settled.

Everything is always debatable, especially on the Fern! Juries don't have 100% accuracy rates, they get shit wrong and especially in times of political inference.
Do we need to settle the "argument" of whether Chauvin was racist? Why is that relevant?
As for the rioting, I truly wish I had an answer to that. Looting and deliberate destruction of property is despicable and should be punished, even if triggered and influenced by deeper societal issues.

This is a huge issue in the US, and strong emotions generated can result in tempers flaring and a loss of control. Of course there are will always be people who will use the opportunity to raise hell
-
@canefan and there was tons of footage of legit peaceful protesters getting angry at others for looting and violence. Get a protest type event going with enough folks and some of them are going to be up to no good - irrespective of how worthy the cause or if the majority of people aren't getting violent. I don't think any level of organisational management (BLM, or whoever) is going to rein in people who are only going to rark shit up - whether that is for shits and giggles, to paint the protesters as rioters, or any other variation on those themes.
-
and I fully agree that destruction of private property as part of a riot or protest is scummy as fuck.

Yes, debatable, but like a referee or umpire's decision we've built a system on that being the final assessment, and to learn to accept that.👍
I thought the "racism" of Chauvin killing a black man was the crux of blm, rioting, kneeling, corporate virtue signalling etc. Happy to be wrong on that but I figured that was the impetus for the last 12 months of mayhem.

Ah, thought you meant in relation to tnis event and the trial specifically.
I am no expert on BLM matters, but I would note that it started well before Chauvin, back in 2013 when Trayvon Martin was murdered and that bloke got off (an example of the courts very much NOT getting it right IMO)

Am I missing something here, how is it not? Every news article I saw flash up on the screen this morning was about the racial side of it. I thought it was a cop killing a suspected perp?

Surely we the courts judged him on whether he murdered or manslaughtered (yes, its word) a person, not a black person.

It’s actually worth discussing. Did he do this because he was black? Or did he do this because he was bad police officer, and did the same to whites/asians/everyone else?
Can throw in that cops kill more white people each year than black too.

You'd hope so, but do we really think that?
I was just taken aback at the gym this morning (did I mention I work out) that every time I caught a TV screen, there was someone yapping on about racist this, racist that (at least that's what the subtitles said, maybe not verbatim).

Dunno mate, who knows how the jury looked at it. I'd like to think the evidence of his actions were what convinced them and that the same conclusion would have been reached if he'd killed a white bloke. Maybe that's naive.
I certainly agree the media has gone to town on the racial angle. As have many of the protestors.

So what do we call a black cop ( or hispanic) that kills a black perp?
Data from Sam Harris indicates this is more prevalent than white on black. Definitely more black cops assault black perps.
So what's the story? Is police brutality the crux of the issue or racism?
Is it BLM or CLM? (criminals lives matter). -
@siam said in Black Lives Matter:

Something which I found interesting (which you may as well) is that apparently Minneapolis has had rioting issues in about 100 sq metres of the city. All the news I've been watching continuously shows Minneapolis in a complete state of unrest.
However, when you scratch the surface, it seems that it's only a tiny part of the city. Same as Portland.
It's still rioting of course, but I guess like when it happens in London, it's relatively easy to avoid.

Is it BLM or CLM? (criminals lives matter).Yeah, this is the UK issue I think. There are not enough cops of colour shown on the newsreels whenever something controversial happens.
Fully plays on the cops - bad white men theme.
It's been a while since I've been in London, but when working there every day, I did notice what a high percentage of cops I would see that were woman. Yet, you rarely see them in the news reels.

but, in the eyes of the law, surely there will be an appeal.
The judge has pretty much said that there are strong grounds for a mistrial after Democrat politicians called for violent protest if the verdict wasn't guilty.

This nails it for me.
Which is more important - a decent police force or a racially-sensitive police force?

It seems cruel when reduced to scale like that. But we all do that for many complex problems and distortions of well founded principles. I know I do often. Except for covid😉, that's not allowed.
These riots are a gross dereliction of duty though and are symptoms of far more ominous machinations. A half interested government could cease these riots in a fortnight. Easily fixable, but there's no will. Don't forget that Portland had 100 nights in a row in that tiny little area, (adjectives I wouldn’t use in front of a resident or business owner). In the same vein, there've been Autonomous zones and destruction of innocent's property and even murders throughout all these activist movements.
Brett and Heather Weinstein give first hand accounts of living in portland every week. There's a bit more to it than bad luck for a tiny outlined square on a map.
I'm not sure that reducing the severity of these crimes into small areas is much of an answer, unless one is arguing that the US is awash with riots - which no one is.
Slippery slope reducing or downplaying obvious debilitating crimes that basically everyone is disgusted at and that are eminently fixable, no matter the scale.
Reminds me of the "working class" grooming girls. The scale doesn't reflect the severity, and some behaviours cannot ever be tolerated despite their relative scarcity.

Especially, and moronically, when it is aimed at BAME owned property and BAME owned & operated businesses.
'Let's steal as much stuff as we can and burn this shit down'
People lose livelihoods and business' / jobs, leads to unemployment, and the cycle spirals lower and lower.
But it's the white 'Man' keeping us down.
Well played you fucktards.
