Nga Kete is a residential facility where people on bail facing charges pay nearly $19,000 for a 12-week programme including treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.

Pretty clear message sent by voters in most of the main centres today. I may not live in Dunedin, but I was thrilled to see Hawkins dropped.
Auckland is in the mood too. It appears many of those strongly affiliated with Jacinda are going down. Who knew Aucklanders loved their cars so much!
-
Voter apathy in Whangarei seemed to win on the day...with the current Mayor stepping aside, the top 2 candidates had 12,000 votes between them with around 60,000 registered to vote in the Whangarei District, and the winner was not who I voted for!!

@canefan I largely agree re AT but to me Brown comes across as a poor man's Bob Jones.
He's a reactionary with a very chequered political past. Most of his notion seem to me to be outdated.
The sad thing is none of the mayoral candidates inspired much confidence - not that the Mayor of the Akl Council has much real power anyway. If Brown really wants to make a difference, he's going to have to develop a consensus. He just seems too GOM to be able to do that.

Yeah I don't know if he can get it done. The bar was set pretty low. The council power base appears to have shifted though so he will have an opportunity

from what I can tell, the vast majority of new Mayors are all still opposed to the Govts
theft schemeThree Waters scheme, so will be interesting to see how that progresses. -

@antipodean Labour and the Greens hate farmers in short.
-
@antipodean The government has decided to risk economic calamity so that we can impress the world by decreasing our carbon emissions by enough to change worldwide emissions by about 0.04%.
My understanding is that if we do this we will get a special round of applause at the UN or somesuch. It’s inspirational if you think about it.
-
@Kirwan its a joke...I imagine a shopper in Europe having the choice between Kiwi beef/lamb and beef/lamb from anywhere else, and the Kiwi lamb is twice as much due to the emission tax, they'll choose the Kiwi beef/lamb, cos they care about the environment right?
-
Great stuff considering animal products constitute ~43% of New Zealand's exports.
-
@taniwharugby If we can’t export lamb they would see it a a feature rather than a problem.
I suspect a large number of the people who think this is a good idea have a parallel agenda of stopping livestock farming altogether. Vegan is the way to go.
I’m not sure how the socialist utopia that the Greens want will be able to provide the standard of living we need if we have no exports from agriculture and the tourism industry disappears.
-
@JC they never seem to go into detail of what will replace it, just speak of other industries picking up.
Maybe we should start planting vegan trees everywhere for export on our solar and wind powered ships made of recycled plastic.

It’s all just virtue signalling isn’t it? NZ’s total annual carbon emissions are broadly the same as the emissions from Bełchatów power station, which is just down the road from where that @kirwan chick lives in Poland.
One. Power. Station.
-
@JC While I agree with the sentiment that's an argument for no one anywhere taking any action and absolving responsibility.
Everyone has to do their bit.
Here is my personal manifesto
I never drive to the pub
I have absolved to never eat tripe again
I offset my air miles withnative forestgrowth
My beef and sheep herd is way smaller than the national average
I recycle appropriately all political pamphlets I receive
I don't play with the air conI'm sure there's more - but every little bit helps.

There is a heavy agenda against protein in general, as a "luxury" food. Increasing the price of protein will be a public health disaster due to the increases in diabetes and other obesity related illnesses. These people will of course continue to eat luxury proteins at fancy restaurants on the tax-payers dime. They are enemies of the New Zealand people.
