My sister is one of these people. She doesn't harbour hate against the rich.
However, it would appear, this is what the Greens and Labour seem to want: rich people don't pay enough tax and they are the reason you are poor, you should hate them.
Although unsure what the definition of rich is in NZ anymore...

anyone who can afford a house - apparently.
I think rich is so subjective and relative anyway. Much easier to define poor than rich.
Of course just like politics your definition is clouded by where you personally sit on the spectrum

Someone who can both feed their family AND fill up their car with fuel?

Just like in Orwell's Animal Farm, I'd suspect the Green MPs themselves wouldn't count themselves as rich...

I remember Helen Clarke defining rich as over $75,000 about 15 years ago. Delusional.

An ideologist rather than a realist, I think. We need both but neither having control.
He is the face of some really daft policies though, so he has to own that.

“Police can advise a third charge has been laid as part of a shoplifting investigation subject to public interest,” police said in a statement today. “The woman previously charged will now face an additional charge of shoplifting, relating to alleged offending at a Wellington retailer on 22 October 2023. “The woman will appear on all three charges in the Auckland District Court on 1 February 2024.”

Well, I'd like to be the Pascoes.
As I understand it, the bridges haven't been built yet either so I'm prepared to bet it won't go close to budget.
I think we have some engineers on here, I'd love to hear their thoughts.

@gt12 That doesn't surprise me and I'm not a civil engineer, but I'd expect most work is done before laying tar and painting some lanes.
I am and it (the headline) surprises me, BUT, does it include purchase of land? In that case it doesn't

enabling works, drainage, temporary and permanent earthworks, procurement, land acquisition, environmental and ecological work and regulatory compliance that has contributed to the spend to date.
Not as if they've done no construction which is implied.

Actually, I've re-thought and you are right.
Given how incredibly shit NZ roads are, this makes sense.
They certainly shouldn't be worth that much money for the quality you get.

Reading a bit more looks like they didn't line up all their ducks, and have some unanticipated costs.
Definitely see cost escalation, nit sure it'll get as high ($1B) as the critics suggest.
Is this pretty common?
My feeling is that NZ can't afford to have projects that get held up / stopped /delivered late with huge overruns this often.
As a recent returnee, it feels like everything is done poorly, expensively, and late.
