I’ve seen it and had anecdotal “evidence” in my work (financial planning), that retirement can be a killer. Those who have a plan or a purpose - something to get them up in the morning, are the ones that tend to live a long and happy retirement. Those that have the attitude of “that’s me done, I’m gonna put my feet up” with no plan are the ones that are dead in 6 months. There is of course the correlation of the former tend to have provided well, whilst the latter have relied on their pension only to find it doesn’t stretch that far. Particularly relevant when you have much more time to fill.

In Oz the introduction of the aged pension was at a time when the average life expectancy was less than the qualifying age. It's laughable that it didn't track over the decades.
With one glaring proviso - no one can keep being a labourer in their 70s.

Cheers. I'll have a look at that. "Avoid retirement and stay alive" apparently. Author has a very unfortunate name to be taken seriously - Bogan. There is some research behind what he says by the looks of it and the Fern has come to the same conclusion above, which is completely contrary to our ethos and somewhat worrying (both reaching a consensus and a conclusion, which leads me to believe that it is wrong).

Definitely this. I never retired, I own a business and built a house, but it's not the same as an actual job, so "hi ho, hi ho, it's..." again. Fortunate to have done everything young enough to do that.

Work keeps you on your toes, and stretches you to accomplish goals that matter."Personally, I don't fear the reaper I've invited him to dinner and shaken hands a few times, but withering away just isn't me. Being an invalid (tried that, briefly) or losing my marbles scares the shit out of me. So full on activity and stimulation until I shuffle off this mortal coil is the way to go.

This thread now has me mildly concerned. I thought I had it all figured out but it seems I need to ease into retirement or I'll pop my clogs.
i do need constant stimulus. Not one to sit still, constantly doing three things at once. Might be more of a challenge that I thought this retirement thing.
Point is @NTA mentioned above how those who have had a lifetime of hard physical labour are knackered by 65. I think the same can be true in any role, depending on how much you put into it. I did probably 30 years of 65+ hours week. Last little while I've pegged this back to 50 odd. It's not physical but it's still challenging on the body. Plus most of that time I've been responsible for profitability and the livelihood of up to a couple of hundred staff. I'm just tired.
If work offered me any fresh challenges, I'd be more than keen, but the same old grind. Fuck off.

It sure does require a hell of a lot more thought than most of us have put into it. We put so much effort into careers and so little into what comes afterwards (and yet it could be another 30 years).

A very important topic and one we can all relate too. Apologies if already mentioned but I found Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke very interesting.
Basically, her theory is we all have dopamine as a reward system that makes us feel good. When we get high, play games, sex etc we get a release of dopamine to encourage us to do that activity again.
What is largely unknown is that it is not an unlimited resource, you only have so much of it. She uses the analogy of a see saw, your body wants to be in homeostasis or balance. If you have too much dopamine, i.e play too many video games your see saw tips into the pleasure zone too much. Stop playing video games and your brain will quickly try to get that balance back.
So, what does it do, well the opposite of pleasure is pain, so when you stop doing your addiction or pleasure activity you will experience some pain, discomfort, craving and withdrawal until you get back to balance.
Obviously, the level of pain will be dependent on just how hard you hit the pleasure side, but this idea is very easy for me to relate to, and I am sure we have all experienced this or seen it in others.
I think if we take video game addiction for example. If you play hours and hours of video games you deplete your dopamine for pleasure, to get more pleasure you have to play more and more. As soon as you stop playing games, any other activity is painful and unenjoyable as you have no more dopamine left and your body is trying to get back into balance.
She said the only real solution is to try balance the amount of pleasure we give ourselves. Or try to purposely deny yourself dopamine as if you have a deficit then the opposite will happen, you will get pleasure from less obvious things.
This is why she thinks Ice baths are very effective as its painful, is actually a dopamine negative activity, when we get out, we now have more room to do pleasure. This is also potentially why exercise or hard exercise whilst physically painful often results in better mood.

No challenges to survive on limited food. No sabre-toothed tigers. Our bodies grow older than perhaps they were supposed to.
Perhaps this also hooks into the mental illness thing? Without the right stimuli for our monkey brains, we invent our own demons...

And when we decide to use our brains, we find we can use tech to do the thinking for us.
I got back into electronics a few years back and re-learned a lot of RF design theory. It was great to get my old HP15 calculator being used again. That didn't last - I found a website which did it for me...

I'm currently reading The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck. Among the concepts the author discusses was the fact that we as a society have become addicted to outrage and being overly trigger-happy, and that it is like a sugar high, energizing but ultimately fruitless. Maybe just a weak moment but it did make me think of that...
