Watched Spies Like Us with my kids last night. Never actually saw it back in the day because the video we rented was dodgy.

Was pretty good. Also a good history lesson for the kids about the Cold War and the threat of nuclear destruction.

I believe Chevy Chase is an all-round fuckwit and looks like absolute shit now. But back in the day he did have a certain something that made him appealing. Certainly more so than the dude in the Vacation remake.

Will try and put them in genres as best I can, no way on earth can I name a mere five movies. That's absolutely impossible.( in any case I'm sure to forget a few that should be on the list )

Series/trilogies - Star Wars, Bond, Raiders, Aliens, Back to the Future, Dollars trilogy, Dirty Harry, Terminator

Comedies - Super Troopers, Beverley Hills Cop, Bad Santa, Trading Places, Slammin Salmon, Kingpin, Friday series

Action - Commando, Predator, Heat ( or is this more a drama ? ), Saving Private Ryan, Enter the Dragon, Game of Death ( or are these kung fu movies ? ), Carlitos Way, Scarface

Drama - Schindlers List, Gran Torino, Shawshank Redemption, Deer Hunter

Horror - 28 days/weeks later, Hostel, Event Horizon, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hannibal series

Took the kids to "The Secret Life of Pets" yesterday. The chance to explore a really cool concept was missed by the writers, who effectively re-made Toy Story with dogs.

I'll stick to the original '5 movies' question

Star Wars

ROTLA

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Princess Bride

BTTF

May not be the 'best' movies I've ever seen (SW excepted) but are the ones I still enjoy whenever I see them.

Realised I completely forgot any Tarantino movies in my original list so from his stuff add Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Inglourious Basterds and Reservoir Dogs.

Also with the sad news that Gene Wilder passed away it would do to mention Blazing Saddles ( an absolute all time comedy classic ) High Anxiety and Young Frankenstein.

Gene Wilder was one funny man, his movies with Richard Pryor were pretty good but he could have retired after blazing saddles and still been a legend . Didn't he have to give away acting because he lost his hearing?

I didn't know that but I'm sure in all the online obituaries over the next few days we'll find out more.

Blazing Saddles is genuinely laugh out loud funny to this day. So many funny, dodgy and inappropriate scenes. Needless to say my sons love it although I do fast forward the "nigger" scenes ( which are funny as fuck when you're grown up ) The Waco kid is one of many brilliant characters in it.

I think they quite literally watched the farting by the camp scene a hundred times in a row once.

But in tribute to Genes best role I give you this.....

War Dogs: Jonah Hill and Miles Teller star as two young guys who sell arms and other equipment to the US military - things go a bit pear shaped as they have to slightly bend the laws to get the job done. It's kind of a comedy drama, a bit like The Big Short is style. Jonah Hill is great as an obnoxious character. The story is pretty interesting and led me to the article the movie is based on.

I'll post a link to the article on the good reads thread.
