Jason Bourne.

Meh. I was expecting a lot more from this, especially having enjoyed the first three (I haven't watched the one without Matt Damon). It was just same old same old bouncing between Europe and the States, except it didn't feel fresh or thrillerish. The stakes were pretty shallow, and the momentum came from the usual 'eeek, must kill Bourne' rather than him presenting as a genuine active threat or blackmailing the CIA. But while there were some pretty impressive chase scenes (especially the SWAT truck one) they just seemed to go on and on. And the interlinking plot was pretty thin, a few subplots were pointless (like the social media stuff) and because people were popping up then swiftly dying or disappearing, there wasn't much in the way of character development or meaningful interaction. I wanted so much more in terms of unravelling Bourne's past.

Damon was good, Tommy Lee Jones reliably crusty, Alicia Vikander straddling the line of good and evil. Vincent Cassell was almost robotic as the Asset, for someone who it was allegedly so personal for, he didn't show much emotion, and his body count was a bit ridiculous.

3 Treadstones out of 5 Iron Hands.
-
Went to the movies with the missus to watch Suicide Squad. Wasnt as bad as I was expecting (given it had been panned by the critics). The superhero genre is so over done these days and other than 1 or 2 oddball characters, this movie brought nothing new.
5.5 nutjobs out of a possible 10.

It's not even in the same ballpark at 1 & 2 IMO.
I really didn't like the mass carnage during the final chase scene. It just didn't fit in with the rest of the franchise.
Couple of movies lately on the Netflixing:
Looper
Really liked this Noir style sci fi. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a pretty fucking good actor, and with the makeup on almost unrecognisable. Great plot line, bunch of mind fucks and one sadistic little mofo of a kid. Bruce Willis is pretty good in it, too.
The bit where the guy's body parts kept disappearing confused the fuck out of me at first.
4.5 out of 5 blunderbusses.
The Three Musketeers
The 2011 one with some little Yank prick in the lead, supported by a bunch of decent Euro actors in Christoph Waltz, Mads Mikkelsen, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, and Luke Evans. Oh and Mila Jovovich's thighs play a significant supporting role.
This got the shit panned out of it, but I actually found it a great waste of two spare hours. Swordfighting, cleavage, derring-do and some fantastic cinematography. Freddie Fox as the foppish boy king is a laugh.
3.5 out of 5 ripped bodices.

I've been reading good things about Mel Gibson's new movie as director, Hacksaw Ridge. It's about a conscientious objector who got the Medal of Honor for saving dozens of men's lives.
"The battle scenes in Hacksaw Ridge make the opening scene in "Saving Private Ryan" look like a Noel Coward play."
Out in early November.

I'd love to see a movie based on Crete, and anything to do with Sir Charles Upham.

@antipodean Surely Peter Jackson can sort this out?

Is discussed in the will anyone beat 148 tests I think...
Cant class it as a 'movie' but I know a few people that have been to see it and other reports I have read, it is a decent watch, but have said like his book, just doesn't give you enough.

Took the kids to "The Secret Life of Pets" yesterday. The chance to explore a really cool concept was missed by the writers, who effectively re-made Toy Story with dogs.
I saw this in the weekend, agree they could have done a lot more with the concept. Pretty shallow plot, really just a series of "pretty funny" moments. The boy laughed a lot though so was great from his perspective.

Yeah but are you a Bond fan ? ( can't remember )
Craig is starting to look a bit bored of it all already but I thought Waltz was awesome as Blofeld and great to see the tough henchman brought into the series, ridicuolously awesome punch up this one although Craig didn't have a single mark on him the next day.....still, no series does a train fight like Bond does....
-
@MN5 not especially, but if you have to a fan of the series to like the movie, then the movie has failed.
That train fight was ridiculous. They tore that train to fucking pieces, in a very public demolition. And what was the result? Fucking nothing. They went and fucked, then the train dropped them off, re-dressed, with all their luggage, where they wanted to go. I know Northern Africa is pretty fucked up, but I'm pretty sure even there a fight of that magnitude is going to draw attention and consequences.
And Bond got his ass handed to him, but showed no outward effects? Fuck off. Remember Casino, the one decent Craig Bond film, where him getting fucked up actually resulted in him ending up in hospital?
I think that was the worst character development of any villain of any movie i have ever seen.
It wasn't a shit movie, it just wasn't all that good.
-
Yeah I agree with that as I said when mentioning he didn't have a mark on him. I guess each movie has to be realistic within it's own universe so that bit irks me more than a bit cos as you mention in Casino Royale he ends up with all sorts of cuts and bruises yet comes up against the toughest brawler yet and has nothing in this flick. I thought the fight was awesome, have always liked the 'hero getting messed up by a huge fucker but somehow winning" thing. It's the aftermath that I didn't like. Still It's not a new phenomenon in Bond, after all Connery went from this classic.....
to this shit......
