Ten female presenters considering suing BBC over pay dispute

I guess this explains the the female Dr Who - the BBC did that to save money!

Chris Evans almost killed top gear and is a shouty annoying little twat and yet earns $2000000 a year. I didn't think I could loathe him more but there you go.

This may end up moving to the Politics thread.

I imagine all of those presenters have individual contracts that they negotiated with the BBC. If they agreed to and signed a contract I'm not sure they can just turn around now and say "not enough". I don't know contract and employment Law well enough though so will check with the better half tonight, but there is probably an element of the men playing hardball more than the women in terms of pay.

Also in this line of work I assume value comes into play. For example I imagine Hosking gets paid more the Street on 7 Sharp, as without him the show doesn't get nearly the same viewership particularly when it first came on TV.

That said, there is some pretty marked differences at the top there so I expect them to at least narrow that gap, but I doubt it's as black and white as many will make out. I guess this revelation will give the women a drive to demand more then they otherwise would have.

Overall though it astounds me how much these idiots get paid.

The worst you can hear when talking about pay upon job acceptance is "OK"

The simple question is; are you the reason a show is successful? If you can be replaced and the show continues, then no, you don't get to have as much as someone else.

News presenters / personalities are extremely well remunerated but they are a victim of fashion. They have very little job security - it's not like you sign a contract for a job for life in that gig - and can be cut on the whim of whoever . The second ratings fall, or they fall from public favour or their patron in the executive loses their job, they're gone. Though usually onto the next well paid gig.

Women could probably complain that their attrition rate is linked to their age / relative hotness unless they earn the "Briscoes Mum" status.

So there's an element of "danger pay" in their exorbitant salaries.

it'd be tough to quantify in most cases.

Unless say Chris Evans was co-host with a female, where they were supposedly equal everything except in pay...and even then, there is still argument about who the more important person is (if it was Evans and a hot chick, then the latter...) and this is usually driven by someones public profile, persona.

Look back at CGW, I doubt Riggor and Mulligan were on the same money (both dudes) and I expect for a large part of their time, they were both on more than Holt as well, although as her profile grew, I expect her salary did too.

Doesnt concern the BBC but in terms of male vs female pay I always found it weird that the chick that plays Penny on the BBT could demand the same pay as Leonart and Sheldon. Or even get paid more than Wolowitz or Raj. If any of those is replaceable on that series it's the hot chick. You could even argue that Sheldon's girlfriend is more valuable now. Actually without Sheldon the entire series is fucked so it's ridiculous that anyone is getting paid anywhere near him.
