Yes. In league you can deliberately knock the ball over the dead ball line.

Maybe it was a tactical/collective decision thing from Hansen, Read & co because they felt Angus was reacting negatively...

Yup, no different to if a player stops a try being scored with a high tackle. In position legally, but stopped the try with an illegal act. Penalty try.
