WTF is going with this coverage. There's live athletics going on and I just watched a "segment" of journalists having a fucking race or something earlier in the day, followed by ads.

This is honestly close to unwatchable.

When Keith Quinn criticises TVNZ you know TVNZ have got it wrong.

Glad I'm not subject to what appears to be be absolute balls up in NZ.

Further, re the games coverage I expect Channel 7 to be shit.

FFS they have at least 4 FTA channels. At best they use 3 for CG coverage. Most often only 2.

Why why why could they not do what Channel 9 did for the London Olympics did? Give SBS the ethnic type games on FTA then have dedicated channels on Foxtel for specific sports? Was awesome. Best Games coverage ever. I watched heaps. This case i watch fuck all.

My opinion ia that the TV companies are trying to appeal to the breakfast TV watchers. The mums that don't watch or care about sport. So they show the building "colour" rather than the sport.

    No understanding imo.

The para sports are never even close to a level playing field. That Aussie just ran 100m in 13 seconds, some of the other girls couldn't dream of that given their obvious physical limitations. I don't even know what the Aussie girls disability was?

@donsteppa Yep. The Stuff live blog has actually been pretty good. That's how I've found out things are even on, because the TVNZ website is crap. half the time you have two channels playing the same thing, but far worse is when they have live NZ action not playing because of some fucking unimportant replay, or cut to ads instead of a NZ medal ceremony etc.

@canefan we know it all goes back to the book of Mitchell 🙂

Fair enough question imo, even if it's a bit rough. Agree with you @Mokey, where is Southby in all of this? Facts/Stats don't care about your feelings! They've tanked under her coaching, which makes you wonder (again) about her initial selection. My mum is netball crazy, and our fall is driving her batshit.

Taurua Barnett was the right choice. But for some reason the cool girls don't want her

    Wai Taumanu?

    Had her go didn't she?

@booboo TV companies are selling advertising, nothing more.
Scripted reality shows, cooking programmes and false emotive news.
Sport was the only value add transmission and seemingly that's now gone.
Fuck em and may commercial tv die a swift death- a plague on mankind 🤨

Its a bit of a concern for RWC 2019 isn't it?
Coverage rights to TVNZ and Spark?

Even if we can get a stream that doesn't crash we will miss the start of the second half while Toni Street interviews the winner of the egg and spoon race between John McBeth and a random Japanese OAP.

@no-quarter amusingly, Hayley Holt injured herself in the race playing the fool trying to hold one of the others back and falling over.

Re the Netball. Netball has a long history of ignoring the best coach because for some reason her face doesn't fit e.g. Yvonne Willering being ignored for the best part of a decade and when after trying everyone else she was finally given a shot she'd been out of the game too long. Still should've won a world championship though.

Southby wasa joke appointment. Took over from Robyn Broughton at Southern Steel for 4 seasons A lot of top players left and they languished for most of her tenure, but her face fit. She'd coached U21's and Fast 5 so clearly was a much better option than either Broughton or Noeline Taurua. That's the Taurua who led Magic for their glory years and then disheartened by lack of opportunities here fucked of to head the newly formed Sunshine Coast team and take them to the title.

SF's are going through a transition period but that's no excuse for the performances they've been putting in. Southby chops and changes the team constantly. I don't think she has a clue who her best options are and netball more than most is a game where settled combinations are crucial.

For all the grief being given to our shooters the midcourt are failing to feed them and Mes and Selby Rickett have performed well for other coaches

Too much reliance on Folau to put the ball through the hoop so the defenders can double-team her and take a chance that the GS will either miss, or worse yet, lack the confidence to shoot.

Mes must be mowing Southby's lawns to be selected so often.

I gave it a go last night for the first time, I fancied settling down in front of the athletics for a few hours. Hopeless, no feel for sport at all. Ad breaks too often and too long, pointless cuts to studio etc etc. Gave up and went to bed. Luckily I don't care about the Comm Games which are a pointless anachronism where some events are very competitive (netball, sevens) and most aren't and it isn't the main focus of a lot of the top athletes who turn up - world class athletes are focused on the Diamond League (late NH summer) rather than this.

apparently it is NZ & NSW's fault attendance has been low for these games as neither would move their school holidays to coincide with the games.

got some feedback from a very reliable source months ago that is not a happy environment to be in. A lot of finger pointing from some players while taking no responsibility for there mistakes. Southby sits back while this is going on and says nothing , is properly a classic case of poor culture. If you read articles with willering/broughton they both go on about the culture and lack on it in this team.
Noeline Taurua crime for not getting the job was that she had not done the coaching courses that the board wanted to get the job.
There is one player in there that the stories i have heard would be quite toxic for team harmony.

LOL. That screams extreme stupidity at board level also. Imagine choosing a coaching course credential over proven, sustained excellence and results and great team spirit.

Women's mountainbiking underway. The two English women have bolted from the start and already have a healthy lead. From what I've seen of mountainbike racing in the past, by far the best place to be is in the front - doesn't seem like people often ride their way back from big deficits.

NZer (Samara Sheppard) is in about fifth.
