Springboks V All Blacks

  • Ofa was good too when he came on.

I would like to start a petition that rugby games be shortened from 80 min to 70 min! Any seconds in the room?

    😞

Nah, the Boks outplayed us for 70 minutes and are obviously improving. Great to see them so competitive against us rather than the shellackings they've got over the last few years.

Love the rivalry and respect, and the way the 2 teams mingle after the game.

  • @tim said in Springboks V All Blacks:

Reminder that this South African team lost to Argentina and Australia this year.

Yes and no. The Boks are France-lite. They raise their game on the Highveldt and against the ABs (providing they haven't decided they don't care about that particular fixture beforehand which is a very French trait in itself).

But yes, we were one handling error away from losing a brace against the Boks which should still be a huge wake up call for a team that failed at a major hurdle each of the past two years.

  • Not a great All Blacks performance, but an amazing comeback. So happy to win. The All Blacks were only ahead for one second of that game, fortunately it was the last one.

So much respect for the Springboks and the Rugby supporters of South Africa. Your team outplayed ours for most that Test.

The All Blacks against the Springboks is the greatest rivalry in sport. Always special to win a close one away from home

Wifey went to bed at 61 mins (30-13)

So did mine, still 4am over here so I can't blame her.

Yeah 3am here ... but got up to watch Richie's conversion, and has now insisted on watching the replay ( @Chris-B ) of the last 20 minutes. 🙂

  • That one is going to take some time to swallow. Congrats boys - pretty impressive to come back and win that one.

  • Can't knock a win, phenomenal thievery

It's fun laughing at the ends of games.

It was almost like shag had this dead rubber pegged for "newbie last minute win" initiation.

That first half needs discussing though, scoring first phase wonder tries against disinterested frogs or woeful wallabies is one thing but against a willing foe that impatient attack can fuck with game momentum

  • Aaron Smith turns 30 in November. Is that old for a halfback?

Watched the game with the Saffa commentators audio (who are actually very, very good) as Sky had the appalling Miles Harrison and Barnes doing the match.

Wish I'd switched over to Sky for the last 20 minutes now.... 🙂

  • So ... we out play them in Welly and we lose by 2

They outplay us in Pretoria and we win by 2

    Some sort of symmetry

  • When is Brodie back?

  • @sparky When Gibson's physio says he's ready.

Not sure really what you watched. I can't remember any of the commentary as being either good or bad ... which, like a ref, is usually a good sign.

Normally I don't actually mind listening to Barnes but he was really rubbing one out as the Springboks got to 30 points...and he'd been more than usually strident from minute one, enough to make me mute him. TBH I'd about given up on the ABs for this game, because they were unable to get any cohesion going and almost no ball.

  • Just got up from nice sleep, looking forward to watching the replay bacon eggs and pancakes, breakfast of champions..!,
Sounds like I should just fast forward the first half..!

    And half the second

  • @majorrage Miles Harrison is so bad he's almost become self-parody.

Stuart Barnes is OK, but nowhere near as incisive as say Martin Bayfield or Joel Stransky. TBF, he's better than Jonathan Davies whose sole input to any game is "space out wide..., space out wide"....

  • Smith's deliberate pass at an SA player to milk a penalty was the low point of the game. He was so bad today.

  • Fitzy's reaction is impressive...

  • I'm waiting for the 9 am replay. Oh, that's right.

A role reversal from Wellington when all the stats favoured the ABs but they lost.

As mentioned great impact from the bench, Ardie especially, but there are concerns that will need to be addressed. Franks looks old and slower to me. I don't think he's going to be any better in 2019.

Not my preferred option (use the space), and I hate that kind of cynicism, but it should have been a penalty. And maybe YC. The guy was offside preventing our attack.

If we base it solely on that game some of the second stringers are pushing for starts. TJP over Smith being one of them.

Happy that Gus ignored that but what about the SA player (Louw?) who played the ball on the ground at the next ruck?

  • This post is deleted!

  • What a steaming pile of shit. How did they win that?

  • @synicbast Fair enough. You can always comfort yourself in the fact he's doing his best Ian Smith impression these days.

    Just with a woeful goatee

That is humilitae in action I believe, Sir Stephen insisting on best public relations practice to fool the con men of the ever critical media.

He had the players show acceptable respect at the beginning by presenting the highest level of Haka (See the discussion earlier in the thread. They have created a monster for themselves there ... the players cannot be allowed to decide what suits them best all by themselves, they must satisfy a vacuous media which determines if the Haka they use is evidence that they are demonstrating proper 'spect) and now he cunningly follows up by cleverly camouflaging All Black arrogance with humilitae!

It is a distorted environment - I know, I know - you just cannot have a winner celebrating a triumph by appearing triumphal in full view of l'il kiddies on family television, because it is a form of bullying or deep seated racism or disbelieving wymminses when they say stuff about blokes or something.

But do not despair - I see booboo was onto the most important bit which the detractors have not noticed, just up the page there 39 minutes ago:

    "Fuck you world rugby.
    Aura is back baby"

  • Watched at parents-in-law. Husband had died yesterday. Will watch replay alone back home tomorrow, but one simple observation is that their starting XV owned us, but their bench weakened them and ours was an upgrade. Finishing XV 19-0.

  • Funny that Hansen had anticipated a Bok kicking game in Wellington by putting Jodie Barrett at fullback and Bender on the right wing. But the Boks played a ball-in-hand game. So Hansen brings Naholo back in Pretoria and the Boks kick for the corners.

I like the late second half backline with BB at the back, Ben Smith on the wing and Mounga at 10. What an iceman the latter is. Feels more solid with him there. Less highwire, which in those sorts of games is what you need.

Cheers, but as I said to the saffa next to me at the pub, that was no impressive comeback, it was a lucky kick followed by a try that was hardly clinical.
I accepted the win but would have been as happy if the conversion missed. We didn’t deserve it.

  • People upset with defence but it kept us in game. Our issue was attack and our lack of accuracy and inability to crete space until the end this constantly meant we were on defence. Maybe we needed to just get over gainline straight away with naholo/Ioane, also think that Barrett could run of first phase more.
we lacked forward ball runners without BBBR and squire, our best options in that game were Taylor and then Savea when he came on.
The issue for SA moving forward is that they can get up for NZ but can they for other nations i.e Argentina and Aussie. be interesting to see how they go vs NH

  • @billy-tell how the hell was the ref fine every single inaccurate call when in the favour of the home team some were horrendous. How the fuck is the standard of reffing gonna improve if this performance is considered fine. This was on the same level as the Frenchie last week

I actually quite like Stuart, reminds me of Bill Lawry. Being NZ based i obviously didn't hear the sky UK commentary .

I was listening to a week old Devlin podcast yesterday as I painted the house, he was interviewing a kiwi guy who works for Sky UK who mentioned they were sending their own UK commentary team as there was a lot of interest in the game. My thought was; "that sucks" as the Saffa English language commentators are good quality - excellent and unbiased, non-whiney in games I've watched even when in tough times and Boks were dire. Their viewers would get a better experience if they just left it to the host broadcaster.

  • It's games like this that having me scratching my head at how SBW is so hyped.

He obviously has a great marketing team

  • @booboo I dont think smith pass was premeditated. He looked up and then saw him in the way and heistated. We were a few yards out, an AB was right next to him and he then passed.

I think Smith would have had to then look for another option and wuld have got monstered by onrushing boks.

  • @crucial a win on the highveld against the boks should be cherished.

However, I felt pretty hollow after that. Comprehensively outplayed and no win would have sparked cries of a crisis.

It feels a little like the 6-3 win against Australia before the RWC (for thos old enough to remember!)

Even if the ref thought it wasn't deliberate he still prevented the opposition from playing how they wish (penalty). Even if accidental it is a scrum to NZ.
The only reason for 'wiping out' the offside is if the players was trying to get out of the way and would have been out of the way if it wasn't for a targeted pass.
