Bridge is a much better player than he showed tonight. I hope he gets a start before the RWC.

@mofitzy_ I'll watch the match again, and agree that he seems to have some class. What were his errors that I missed?

Need to watch a replay, but there were some interesting things going on both this and last week despite the shit performances. The dual playmaker dual fullback idea is a good one, if horribly implemented tonight. Likewise the flat attack v argentina has promise against rush defence if we can get it right. Not sure we have time for this if we are also using our few buildup games as player trials though. At least this year I can see what they're trying to achieve, not the powder dry shit from 2015.
Fifita at lock. Yuk. Locks are locks. Shoulda learned that lesson from Chicago.
    Read needs dropping. Franks too.
    Coles to start.
Aaron Smith made every back in our team look a lot better the instant he came on. TJ is a great player, but he just can't deliver ball like that. Nobody can, and it's arguably our biggest strength.
Despite mounga's rank start, the tactic and selection is worth persisting with I think. Barrett is a fine fullback.

@Machpants Hansen seemed extra grumpy that he actually had to answer a couple of softball questions after yet another flat performance.

    bloody interesting times,

It’s been a while since I lacked this much confidence in the abs,

Maybe the early 2000s, like now , we had talent out there, but you weren’t convinced they would put it all together on the day

@Duluth Really poor press conference from Hansen and Foster, all the energy and zip of a morge. Grumpy and aloof like Grizz Wylie in 1991. Lots of excuses for poor Rugby. So many lines we have heard before. No wonder the players are looking bored.

I think they might need to see if Wayne Smith or Ted can do some work with the squad.

My fault. Sorry folks. Was at a work piss up. We never win when I don't watch. Kind of the opposite to cricket.

I'm shocked that there isn't more discussion about how absolutely pants our starting props were. Moody is still miles away and Frnaks - from what I can see of the stats, did nothing on attack.

I've been critical of Franks for a while now, and he's never been mobile or a ball carrier.

Hansen said Moody had some sort of virus during the week, which was the reason he was subbed earlier than usual. I'll cut him some slack because he has performed in the past.

Think there was a drop? And the Bok try, although I haven't analysed the replay to determine how much was on him. Regardless, 20 mins isn't much to go on.

I know a lot of the criticism has been on the ABs inability to cope with the rush defence but the onus needs to go on the forwards to provide front-foot ball and be direct so the backs have a platform to work from. If the opposition are retreating they can't rush up as quickly, and the speed of the pass will always beat the man. Cron needs to earn his money.

Losing BBBR is huge in this regard because he, along with Moody, are the only members of the tight 5 who are effective as ball-carriers. Even Aust gets more from their props and locks than we do. Taylor/Coles are link players.

They tried to use Frizell in those wider channels but not enough to make a difference. Ardie was really missed.

They did make some inroads and when they kept it tight and hit in and around the ruck, they got space out wide. Poor execution rather than tactics hurt us tonight.

One thing is that without a pre RC hit out test, we have looked poor two weeks in a row.

The last 20 minutes today were all set up for a McKenzie cameo off the bench. He has holes in his game but he could have been a rwc game turner off the bench.

For all the doom and gloom the ABs defence has been generally very good these last 2 weeks.

To win the World Cup you need a squad. No problem with selections. But have to have your best goal kicker kicking. Dumb.

Got to pick the best ten first. Was notable how much BB played at ten in the second half and how much better the backline looked when he did.

Richie is a big step down at 10.

In fact BOTH BB and Ritchie looked better at 10 than RM did in first half. For much of that Smith on, and his pass delivers more time. Faf off and AB forward giving faster ball, which could also be factors.

BB came in to 10 more, but RM's passing started to yield results, in particluar when ALB at 12.

Thought Smith/RM/ALB in fact looked good.

What I like about Mounga and ALB (and Coles) against rush D is they use footwork so you can’t get a good shot on them. Mounga fir me helped us get some momentum through his runs where as Barrett just runs hard and straight which often gets nullified by massive forwards. Noticed a change in A Smiths game as well, was running across 2-3 steps to hold rush then hitting first reciever which was having a lot of success. Worth persevering.

Glad you posted this. FWIIW my biggest take on 12 was that Boks could defend direct 'power' charges all day long. On comes ALB with a pause, a feint and a shuffle and it was 'open sesame'.

They have to persist with Mounga at 10 because Barrett’s goal kicking is not up to standard. The only other alternative is Jordie kicking from the wing but in my opinion the rest of his game is still on flaky.
