Nick Mallett referenced Glen Jackson in some of his comments on the weekend.
I am paraphrasing, but he was saying that the best available referees are at the RWC - except Glen Jackson who apparently (and obviously to Mallet's disagreement) lost out on a vote by the referee selection panel.

I can rant about the refs, or the TMOs, or World Rugby. I don't think any of them covered themselves in glory last night.

But I'd rather rant about our tactics. Our mindless adherence to a one-size-fits-all game plan, while Wales pick us off with smart plays and good execution. Our ten-minute stints of madness where we forget how to pass, catch and tackle. Our complete lack of goalkicking ability.

Wales were the better team, and deserved to win. To my eyes, they are greater than the sum of their parts. I don't think you can say the same about the Wallabies.

I've said it elsewhere, but the Davies intercept was a perfect summation of the difference between the two teams. An incredibly smart tactic that was well-devised and well-executed. They did their homework and capitalised on a weakness of ours.

What did we do? Run the same shit out that we always do, and let the cards fall how they may. It's just not good enough for an international rugby side.

    Spot on.

In the Wales v Georgia thread somebody was up in arms with Davies' attempt at an unsuccessful interception. I posted that this is his calling card.

The Australians obviously hadn't watched any tape of Davies either.

Late to the party but wow, the fact a fend to the upper chest is even looked at is ridiculous. Happens multiple times every game.

Just watched the game in full.

Foley made a few mistakes, definitely. Toomua looked better, but Wales were gassed. Always the advantage of coming off the bench I guess.

Genia was almost as shit as Foley. Two intercepts due to his steppy steppy sideways bullshit. Better options in Australia.

Our forwards aimed up pretty well I thought. DHP had probably his best game in gold.

If we select Toomua to start, I reckon we win that behind the sliding doors.

Agree. For a guy that’s usually good for a clanger or two a game, he played with great composure and backed up very well.

    WalesOnline verdict.

Agree on 3 of the 4. Patchell shit technique, carry on.

    1. Tipuric deliberately taken out off the ball in lead up to AAC try

    2. Kerevi penalty

    3. G Davies Interception

    4. Genia forward pass in lead up to DHP try

Don't agree with the Tipuric call.

From my Welsh couch I can understand it being fine if Tipuric had bought the dummy run and set up for a tackle, but I saw a defender (Tipuric) drifting across field following the ball and being cleaned out.

    Your take please?

The Davies call was 50/50, and at very least deserved a look upstairs. I think he's maybe an inch onside, but have a look at this shot:

    24067f8f-f834-47e3-8b81-f4d1f65116e4-image.png

To me that ball is not out of the ruck, and Davies is maybe just onside. But that's a static photo so hard to judge what happens next.

Given the importance of the try in the context of the game, I'm amazed they didn't give it a second look.

I don't disagree that the TMO should have reviewed it formally. Do we know that he didn't review it in the time taken between the try and the conversion? Knowing Ben Skeen I'd be a little surprised if he didn't have a look.

I have seen another still, quite a few frames later when Genia has picked up the ball and is shaping to pass it. In that still Davies appears to be at the HMF or perhaps just slightly beyond it with one foot. I am very comfortable that Davies was not offside.

What annoyed me about Kearns was he went on our national radio and confidently stated as FACT something that is clearly in the least debatable. It was the derision of the ref and his blanket statement that the Aussies were wronged by it that annoyed me.

@Damo this whinging and playing the victim is very un-Australian. Chieka, Kearns and everyone else who should know better should be ashamed

Amazing how DHP plays well when he is selected in his proper position of fullback.

Cheika has been shoe-horning him onto the wing for years and he's not cut out for it. He's a poor winger and a good fullback.

That's a myth, the NRL is riddled with it - I don't watch AFL but I assume it is too.

French flair, hulking saffa forwards, now the aussies. Which of my long held preconceptions will be debunked next?
