Coronavirus - UK

@Kiwiwomble am sure in an extreme example such as that, it'd be easy, but right now I dont think they have drilled down the numbers for the non-decapitated deaths.
I also expect the numbers, particularly in places like Bangledesh and large swathes of Africa must be much worse than reported due to lack of testing.

Probably also pointing out these are people who died with COVID, not necessarily from COVID.
Think most countries are recording deaths this way, if they have tested positive and then die, they count as a covud death.
We have had 1 who was counted as a covid death yet had tested negative but because they had symptoms and had been in contact with positives they were counted.
surely the actual cause of death must be connected to the virus....like a gun shot victim with a positive test wont go down as a covid death
This is why "all cause mortality " death stats are so important. If they jump massively then that indicates something vital. As it stands, more people died in the same period in 2018. A worse pandemic then?
Can't remember a lockdown to save the population then🤔
See Pakmans video post. If somebody can explain that, it'd be welcome
-
@Siam yeah be we all know you cant straight up compare, as we've already had lockdowns that will have stopped/slowed the spread of other things like the normal flu, less random hook ups so less STI spread and less people driving to work so less accidents etc...its just apples and oranges

BBC seriously pissing me off with their scaremongering.
30,000 odd now receiving hospitalisation for COVID-19 related problems.
Majority are 60 + but ‘many are in their 20s, 30s, and 40s’
How many is many you fucktards?
Obviously not many enough if you can’t give the number.
Thanks
Says it all really -
Check out from about 22 minutes: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000rk6c/bbc-news-special-coronavirus-update-07012021 BBC interviewer stunned by how positive he was. Closes down spurious NZ comparison. Back to normal by Easter.
Breath of fresh air!

The UK did exactly that for the first few months of the pandemic. Problem came to light when a pedestrian was knocked down and killed but was classified as a Covid deaths as she'd tested positive 3 months previously.
TBF. the government has been consistent that the true death toll won't be known until teh excess death figures become clear.
-
1,325 deaths reported today.
On a positive note, a paramedic in Kent has told our family that Covid hospital admissions seem to be starting to fall
-
Very sorry to read of anyone passing away but the continued death toll and the breakdown of those dying in the pie chart above really highlights how unhealthy those aged 60+ are in the UK.

Yeah, people naturally get more unhealthy as they get older, but that's exacerbated by people not looking after themselves. Bad habits start at an early age.
-
Successive UK Governments have struggled to get the healthy eating, be active, don’t be overweight, don’t smoke, drink in moderation message across to the wider UK populace.
COVID-19 has done that in less than a year.

It was Sir John Bell, Professor of Medicine at Oxford. Given his strident optimism I doubt he'll ever be seen again on BBC!

For Ferners who can't access iPlayer, here are highlights:
First dose vaccine gives near 100% protection against SEVERE disease
Maximising first doses very shrewd and will definitely save lives
No evidence three month gap to second dose reduces efficacy of Oxford vaccine
Those who catch virus have protection for at least six months
Latest data suggests vaccine cross protection against Kent variant
Will know soon if vaccine protects against South Africa variant
Having made original Oxford vaccine, much easier to create new one for variants as required – much less than one year
Scientists had made massive contribution to lessening virus impact. Really stunning display – vaccines normally take eight years!
UK has found dexamethadone benefits – big improvements treatment
UK gone from no testing to best on planet
Confident can get on top of pandemic. Very optimistic. Easy to be critical. No one has ever managed a pandemic like this. Hard. Decisions being made on run. Mistakes inevitable. Shouldn’t be apologetic for this. Everyone should do their best. Most people are. Including politicians. Have done pretty good job!
? What about NZ comparison.
A: Small population, lots of sheep. Not very complicated. Don’t even go there!
Hoping for 70% vaccination population, about level for herd immunity.
Starting to think T-cells from other coronavirus infections may make things easier. Maybe less than 70% will be OK. But aim for 70%, at which point we know we’ll be fine.
All will be fine by Easter, life MORE normal.
Thinking based on Oxford and Pfizer vaccines, but other vaccines on top could make things even better.
Thinks vaccination targets should be conservative. Government not wanting to overpromise.
Society overall behaved pretty well. In six months to year can ditch social distancing – not his idea of fun!
What a dude!

Fucken hell...BBC..."people at an old folks home were getting their vaccinations today, so we sent a reporter along to talk to residents to see how they're feeling".
What the actual fuck? This was shortly after a story about how it's so important for people to stay at home and not go out unnecessarily. How are they not getting pulled up on this moronic shit?

There are two things I'd like to see happen:
- The BBC get asked serious questions about that reporter and.
- A government minister lets rip after being asked a dumb question by a (usually BBC) reporter like. "Why does a small country like Israel have the logistics in place to vaccinate 30% of their population and we haven't, and shouldn't you resign for that?"
