So if the Dems win both races what happens?
Senate has even numbers and the VP has deciding vote.
...and this man becomes the most powerful person in America:
(conservative Democrat senator from West Virginia who has already come out against tax hikes, court packing and Green subsidies that hurt mining in his state)

Astute observation.

@Crucial Does anyone pay for Herald 'Premier'?
I don’t know anyone that does. I guess that luddites with a printed delivery of old news might get it included.
I believe it dates back the 60s and it was a way to insure that black canditates would not have an easy path to win when there was a split field.

I think the observation by “Politico” that Trump is in burn it down mode is pretty much on the button.
He’s throwing toys left, right and centre against anyone that doesn’t support his alternate facts.
Problem now for GOP is how long he carries on. If he keeps up the pretence and stays affiliated he will simply erode support for any other candidate they have. A split would ensure at least two more cycles of Dem wins before it settles. -

Not sure that reply pertains to a NZ Herald subscription? Think you have quoted the wrong post?

Geez, Capitol police have put the US Capitol Building in lockdown because Trump supporters have stormed - and breached - the building. Capitiol police now using tear gas. Obviously, proceedings have come to a halt and VP Pence has reportedly been rushed out via underground tunnels by the Secret Service, because trumpists are angry at him for not refusing to certify the election results. They’ve shot into the chamber. ...

It looks way more peaceful than that on the live footage on CNN? Police aren't even trying to push them off the steps on the front entrance
-
Trump must be so proud that he has divided his nation so much.
-
Photo from a journalist: guns drawn, after protesters shot into the chamber.
I think most footage of what is happening will come from journalists (and others) with mobile phones, not from the big cameras of news agencies.

Another angle of that shot in landscape!

This is totally a fools errand, unedifying and Trump is totally complicit in this but some of the hand ringing about this being the natural end point of a dangerous ideology and the evidence of a third world country is way over the top.
In 1996 the same thing happened in Canberra after demonstrations by the ACTU.

For the GOP it is worse than that: they look to be out of ideas on how to handle this, because they know that Trumpism (aka Idiocracy) allowed them to win the last election but has destroyed their party in the process.
They can't alienate him, because he'd just walk off with a sizeable part of their voter base and ensure they never win an election again.
They can't embrace him, because that would be against that thing they're always on about.... "Democracy" that's right. Where elections are held and results are honoured as they stand despite all the mewling shitfuckery.
Tho even Chief Reptile Mitch McConnell came out with a measured response to "overturn the election" in the Senate.
-
@NTA the recent Georgia results are a big deal. Trump's messaging was a massive part of the Dems getting those two seats. Trying to manage the hardcore Trump supporters within GOP while sticking to the 'rules' is just getting harder and harder for Mitch and co.

At best he'd take the loony fringe - just look at the nonsense regarding the reporting of his supporters. Most people vote GOP because it's the alternative to the Democrats.
-
@antipodean how big do you think the loony fringe is? given the two party system it'd only take a pretty small % of GOP supporters throwing their weight elsewhere (lol not Dem) to weaken the 'mainstream' GOP party. If say 5% refuse to vote GOP in the next few years that could have a big impact. I totally agree that the vast majority of voters on both sides are no where near the fringe elements that hog the coverage.
edit - not being a dick with that first question btw, just kind of musing on how big that fringe is for both dems and GOP. Almost impossible to tell with how MSM etc represents things.
-
@antipodean OK maybe "sizeable" was not correct. But it threatens enough to stunt the GOP's chances at future elections.
IF he can maintain the insanity.
