I have no problem with them going after the Catholic Church and finding and charging those responsible for these crimes. But this Pell business is a bit of a pile on. I agree that it would help if he actually showed some empathy (he is a PR disaster), but he was the guy that, pretty much as soon as he became a Bishop, set up the Melbourne response to compensate and help

I think going after the church as a whole is probably a bit much, because there are a lot of them who aren't doing bad things (besides their Catholocism ;)) but I saw an article the other day on the bit in bold:

http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2016/feb/26/the-cardinal-and-the-royal-commission-the-questions-george-pell-must-answer

About three-quarters of the way down:

Pell became archbishop of Melbourne in July 1996 and set about addressing the scandals of abuse in his archdiocese by establishing a church commission he called the Melbourne Response.

He and his supporters advance this as proof that Pell was championing the cause of victims. Perhaps, but the then premier of Victoria, Jeff Kennett, had threatened him with a royal commission by if he didn’t put the church’s house in order.

His response offered investigation and counselling but – unlike the response soon implemented by the Catholic church in the rest of Australia – set low, capped limits on payouts to victims. It would save his archdiocese many millions of dollars.

Ever the financial doyen.
-

Which is of course implying that if Kennett didn't "threaten" him then he would have done nothing and that he also ripped off the victims. Once again, a trifle unfair.

It should be noted that proof of abuse was not required. IIRC the average payout under Towards Healing (the national response) was 48k.

You can also compare that to redress schemes offered by state governments for abuse suffered in state care. The cap was 40k in QLD and the max was 60k in TAS. It could very well be that the Melbourne Response was totally inadequate, but I'm not aware of any organisation or company that will invite people to come forward for compensation and offer them a blank check.

I can totally understand that there is a lot of hate again the Church and since Pell is Australia's top man in the Vatican he will be the focus for this hate. But it really is becoming too much now. Just look at that picture posted above accusing him of being a paedophile. That kind of lynch mob mentality doesn't help anyone.
-

Yep. That's what i had seen reported.

And I'm playing with semantics but as i say i can see how back in the day when he was Fr. George Pell parish priest elsewhere not Cardinal responsible for employees how something so out of whack with your understanding of the world and not within your control wouldn't be his concern.

That's different to him now not being interested.

Not for a minute excusing him for any further wrong doings.

Re the Melbourne response. I have heard some damning criticism of that, hiw it essentially exists to protect the church from further action rather than try to assist the victims. -

I agree with that. I suppose in terms of what the public thinks of him, the emotional range is wide.

I suppose, even if he threw himself on his knees and begged for mercy, it wouldn't change peoples' minds. It would almost be worse than his current emotional blockade.

Ultimately the Church will decide what happens I think - they're in a tricky position.
-

I don't see much of a lynch mob metaility coming from the west, in fact the exact opposite is true . Europe has been over the top in trying to accommodate them which they are regretting now and will do for quite some time.

Getting back to the catholic church, they had systems in place to avoid publicity and protect the pedophiles in their ranks from prosecution . They deserve all the derision being heaped on them, I was raised catholic and one of the schools I went to had this arsehole teaching there, even after he was caught groping boys the rector gave him a glowing letter of recommendation. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=2049379
-

Totally agree Jegga. Go after the paedos and guys like this rector. Destroying Pell and labelling him a paedo isn't fair. -

Ezekiel Stephan, 19 months, died from meningitis after his parents allegedly failed to seek professional medical help in time.

Source: Facebook, Collet Stephan

He died five days after being taken to a children's hospital in Calgary, reports Sydney Morning Herald. Mr and Ms Stephan have pleaded not guilty at the trial, which began in Alberta this week.

The couple run a nutritional supplements company and told police they preferred naturopathic remedies to traditional medicine.

When they noticed Ezekiel first become unwell, they gave him water with maple syrup and juice with frozen berries, before moving on to apple cider vinegar and horse radish root when his condition deteriorated.

The case continues.

I saw that too, the parents looked as obnoxiously smug as you'd expect people who'd kill their child trying to prove they knew better than science how to cure meningitis would.

That poor baby. Having had meningitis myself, I can tell you the pain in your head is horrific, plus the fever, stiff neck, nausea etc.

The parents should be thrown in a tar pit for the suffering that wee lad would have endured before he died. I mean maple syrup? Fuck me days.
-
Both are so very punchable. fluffybunnies.
