Evening the playing field by making everyone pay more is not virtuous.
TO be fair to the government, if they can get GST easily on imported shit, they should. People will still order from online as it's cheaper, but at least the govt will get a cut.
I have no issue with this - provided the cost of collection doesn't exceed the revenue. Sounds like it won't.

Why not drop GST back to 12.5% at the same as expanding the GST base? This isnt about being'fair' it is about imposing more tax burden s they can spend more.

@dogmeat yes and no...I always try to support local, but in many cases it isn't viable, NZers are getting ripped off.
So many examples where you pay considerably more even when accounting for postage, and even now, adding GST many items will still be much cheaper.
Someone is clipping the ticket hugely, I don't believe it is the NZ Retailer; I am sure if given the choice, most people would prefer to buy from the locally owned store, and again form the chain store before buying from overseas, but the variance in price means many people are making the easy decision of paying say $100 vs $200.
-
@taniwharugby yup agree, also (and probably because of the size of NZs market) the range of items you can get locally just pales in comparison to overseas. I recently wanted to get my boy some specific Jurassic Park toys and... couldn't find them anywhere locally. Also many other products are only available in a particular colour or style in NZ, forcing you to buy overseas.
I hate the idea of tax upon tax upon tax that Labour love to put in place. Agree with BSG, they should be lessening the tax burden on domestic retailers. I'm not in favour of the government getting more and more of my (and everyone else's) hard earned cash given it will most likely be completely misspent by idiot politicians.

As Lange famously said, even drug dealers pay GST. Cash jobs wind up paying GST.

Don't worry - the beneficent State will look after you!
I think it's no surprise that Labour is going to tax and spend. However, even they know if they tax too hard and spend too poorly that they'll be a one term government.
I'm taking the long view that a National, National, National, Labour, National sequence of government is going to be better than National, National, National, National, Labour.
A few new taxes will give Bridges something substantive to campaign on!

Haven't got any links yet, but it seems Gayford has been the victim of some unfounded rumours. Mike Bush has issued a statement saying there is no and has never been any issue with Clarke.
I loath Adern's politics and think she and he are nitwits, but this isn't on. -
Unfortunately this comes with the territory , quite handy if you need to distract the media and public from your flailing performance in government though.
Edit , can someone explain to me how hacking into someone’s computer and publishing their emails and Facebook chats in a book during an election isn’t dirty politics? https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12043416

Because that was done on behalf of the side that considers itself the side of moral and good.

Making up shit about politician's partners or kids or other family members is so sad and pathetic.
I still wish Gayford would fuck off though. I'm so sick of seeing his picture and stories about him splashed everywhere for doing absolutely nothing of note.

@mokey I second that. Leaping to Jacinda's defence before the election was cringe worthy. He just needs to keep quiet and stick to his fishing show that no one watches.
Hey I watch it sometimes. But I've also fished with him a few times over the years (notice I didnt include that one in the Most Famous people you have played sport with ( or had breakfast with) thread)

What's with the fuel tax being the only way? I think we should have tolls, like they do in Melbourne and Sydney among others. Drive and scan systems for driving into certain areas like the centre of town through spaghetti junction or the harbour bridge that are congestion hotspots, and new roads like waterview. It seems a little more focussed

Was very surprised Gayford wasn’t on dancing with the stars which I begrudgingly sat through and am now not allowed to watch after apparently paying far too much attention to Shavaugn Ruakeres performance.
Maybe next season he’ll bust out his tango .
I wonder how the view is from the high horse that columnists have climbed onto over this?
