@canefan although that sounds different to what Winny claims to know...but yeah, when you look at all the people they need to keep the borders as they are, it was only a matter of time before someone picked it up and took it out into the community.

Two different examples of mismanagement

@canefan I think early on you could give them benefit of the doubt that they were not aware of the enormity of the job of managing the border and all the peripheral trades and touch points, but you'd have thought they would have seen the gaps before now, or maybe they took thier eyes off the ball focussing on keeping qurantine folk in, they failed to see all these people who were being exposed...
That said, surely these people should take a wee bit of responsibility too, knowing you are going into that environment where you are at risk of exposure, for not upping thier game? If I was someone doing it, I'd want to be fully protected, not just for me, but for my family and friends.
I dont know, I am trying to keep an open and bit more positive mind about it all

@JC my first question is who is counted in that in terms of roles and proximity to the quaranteed. Then I'd want to know what sort of staff interaction happens to see if there was a high risk group who directly interact with lower risk staff.
But unless I hear different I'm thinking that some people in high risk jobs - even if there is a few degrees of separation from returnees - aren't being tested. That is worrying. I'd expect there to be clarification asap if say only 20% of the workforce is high risk so testing 35% means they were erring on the side of caution or something.

How is this OK? Why should it be excused?
Newshub can reveal that just one week before our current community outbreak, 63.5 percent of all border and hotel isolation workers in Auckland had never been tested for COVID-19
This so frustrating. Amateur hour by Cindy and co.

I have no idea. But if the strategy really is to have no transmission into the community then you can’t have a porous border. So if it was me in charge I’d have been stressing that there is absolutely no room for tolerance for people who come into contact with infected travellers to become a vector into the NZ community. That’s the definition of the word quarantine.
The other thing I’d be doing is asking for evidence that there are adequate controls and I’d be asking some pretty searching questions about how any assurances are backed up. The most valuable five words I’ve ever used in my career, and I’ve said it a lot, is “walk me through the plan”. Has no minister ever said that? What about Bloomfield, has he? Have they got something more important to be doing?

Maybe that’s true. But if it is I’d expect someone to have said, at some stage, that here is the strategy and why, here is how we categorise the risks and here’s the science behind why this is the correct number.
FWIW I doubt that’s a valid justification. If it is the opportunity to use it was a couple of hours ago but instead they’ve now said everybody will be tested at least once a week.

@Kirwan Opinion polls suggest the overwhelming majority of Kiwi's are pleased with the way the govt has handled COVID. The next poll will be interesting.
One theory is that the family out there on their tiki tour with the virus are National voters. They waited until the election campaign kicked off just to put a spanner in Labour’s re-election chances Thereby saying that someone in government stuffed up.
The other theory is that the family are in with Labour and were told to hold tight and their test results would be made public post the launch. Labour could then go into full on mode and the PM would get the daily platform as a reminder to everyone of the job previously done and that NZers will ‘rally again’
Just a couple of theories.

I'm just asking questions
I think it's all 5G. I mean, it's the only way this happens again right (aside from Big Vaccine)

@Virgil Unless you stood next to them in the queue you have no reason to worry.
Winnie's claims are Winnie being Winnie. His modus operandi is and ever was make shit up, throw it about and hope some of it sticks.
The govt will be hoping they can trace it back to a cock up at the border. It's unpalatable but better than the alternative.
The lack of testing at the border is unfathomable. If we had no CT then it could only get in across the border. I get that you can't necessarily check everyone every day but twice a week minimum and everyone has to present a log of everywhere they've been since their last shift ended before they begin work should have been a minimum.
Bloomfield has banged on about contact tracing being key. FFS it was the criteria for the move to Lvl 1 - Without social distancing our defence is contact tracing. It appears you only have to do the right thing if you feel like it. Don't want the test? Fine Fuck off. Next...
-
Yeah it’s inexcusable what’s being happening at the borders. They asked us to make all these sacrifices, it’s cost us all money. Some, many have lost their livelihoods. Some have found it too hard to bear and taken their own lives. It’s cost marriages.
The least they can do is take every possible conceivable precaution with layer upon layer of procedure.
They haven’t, it’s been a disaster and we are paying for it. -
I wonder if the numbers returning to NZ and booking flights has slowed now?
In an ideal world, every case they get today is linked to this existing cluster AND they find the border breach, if only the former, less ideal but I think that gives less case for L4?

You have to wonder how many of these blunders have been helped by an ineffective opposition, mostly compliant media and a 'kind' public.
The opposition have faced a public backlash when they have questioned what is going on (maybe fair enough in some cases) and seemly haven't had the skill set to look for right opening to make progress on these kind of things. Imagine if NZF, National, ACT etc. had looked into this lack of testing weeks ago and been pointing it out. They could either have blocked potential holes in the system or be in a position to show that they tried to stop this latest outbreak.
The media don't seem too interested in pushing against Cindy and have pretty much given her a TV slot when she wants to campaign on how good a job Labour have done. The media need to really pressure Cindy and Andrew so that they're going back to their people and walking through these processes and picking up mistakes.
The public seems really averse to any contrary opinion that NZ is the bestest and kindest in the world at Covid. 'We've got this' and any questioning of what has happened/ing is faced with massive pushback, or 'look at the polling numbers' they show how well we've done.
I may have missed it but is there any actual data released on how far we've come since March? How many more icu beds are there? How many more respirators are there? How many people are in contact with new arrivals and what is the weekly % tests for these people?

Or they could let it happen and let the government look incompetent?
