Ms Ardern also defended her call not to refer to the suspect by name.
"One of his goals... was that he sought notoriety and we will absolutely deny him that," she said.I worry that she didn't read what he wrote. As tempting as it might be to write him off as an insane person I would think there is at least some value for people in authority in trying to understand why he did this. I don't know why she'd lie about that. Every chance of course that she has been misquoted too.
I doubt it is a misquote as it was said it parliament wasn't it? Hansard is usually pretty accurate.
I don't get how you would jump to that conclusion anyway. Whether she read every word or took a briefing from analysts (police, political and others) she has judged the conclusion sound.
It isn't difficult to have observed how previous mass murderers and terrorists have 'enjoyed' their notoriety subsequent to the act and I applaud the take to say fuck you! Narcissism, stupidity and their enabling vehicles of social media combined in making this situation. Let's not give them any oxygen. -
@canefan It was more her comment on his goal. His stated goal was actually the opposite of what she said. Probably not best on this thread right now though to discuss.
I've just arrived back in NZ and it really is everywhere. Been hearing some good stories about people offering up their cars to Mosque attendees who can't get theirs due to the scene examination. That's the kind of stuff I want to see pushed by our media, not the crap that is going to make the situation worse

Unity stories are a tonic right now, that is for sure

There’s a vigil/remembrance thing planned for tomorrow in London. Keeping a close eye on whether to go or not as everything around NZ House is on high security due to fuckwits claiming they are looking for retribution.
My suggestion is a big sign saying Australia House that way➡️ -

I know you are joking but it is a rubbish joke as I would be gutted if the Aussies copped it.
Don’t worry. The have loads of extra security around as well. More to the point they are further away from Trafalgar Square..
I’d be gutted if anyone copped this stupid talk of retribution other than the twat that did it himself.
Maybe he could be dropped out of a Herc somewhere over what’s left of ISIS -

I'm going to be very specific and careful with this comment and am mindful I have preconcieved notions about both people...
But reading the story about the Project calling out Australian PM Scott Morrison was this nugget
“If anything paints a clearer picture on the state of Australian politics today it is this; after Waleed made that genuine, thoughtful, and reasoned contribution on Friday night — a plea for our community to come together — the Prime Minister of our country threatened to sue,” Macdonald said.
“In contrast, New Zealand’s Prime Minister invited Waleed to her country to sit down for an interview.Ardern has done a pretty admiral job so far IMO, but I really have to question what value does actively seeking out a sit down interview with a foreign journalist have at this point other than vanity and virtue signalling?
I may be reading too much into it and I absolutely have a preconceived notion about her motivations after the baby and UN antics, but to me a sit down interview for a leader with a foreign journo a week out from something like this seems... odd?
Have a press conference every day for the next fortnight, but this? Nah.
Waleed is a divisive character at the best of times. I agree I see no point to it.
I'm also not that comfortable with the focus on celebrating/wearing the Hijab in solidarity of Muslims in NZ. I'm sure it comes from a good place, but that item of clothing has an awful lot of very bad baggage - for example a human rights lawyer in Iran has been sentenced to 140+ lashes (I.E. torture) and 38 years in prison for defending other women that don't want to wear it. Adern wearing it has not been well received by Muslim feminists that are fighting against this ultra-conservative modesty culture, and fair enough too.

My suggestion is a big sign saying Australia House that way➡️Sadly I think retribution is inevitable as well as probably retribution on that retribution. It is going to be an extremely busy time for security services to somehow avoid an ongoing crisis.

She has done a sit down interview with a few media outlets, Al Jazeera and BBC are two I've seen, and has been doing interviews on some of our breakfast shows.
I don't know much about Waleed but I know Aussie media are interested in this story because the terrorist is one of their lot so makes sense to talk one-on-one to one of their outlets.
Also it is important to keep pushing the narrative so no one else tries to hijack it, like the Turkish President for example. Having worked in media, press conferences don't have the same impact as a one-on-one exclusive. -
@Sneakdefreak Yep. I'll also be amazed if she's having to 'actively seek out' many interviews in the current climate, I suspect it's the other way around for now...

Arden’s media advisor could probably pick and choose from all the requests that have come in.
On the stuff that was on the Project, Ali tried to make a political point that he had no facts on (referring to other media reports that had little verified facts also), and was called out for it. Not surprising given Ali’s contributions to public debate.

Apparently the people who were in the room when Scott Morrison spoke stand by their claim according to the journalist who wrote the original article.

I’ll just leave this here for those of you who don’t know Waleed.
“In its place is a far more sober, pragmatic recognition that terrorism is a perpetual irritant, and that while it is tragic and emotionally lacerating, it kills relatively few people and is not any kind of existential threat.”

I'll save you all a read: Waleed is a hypocritical apologist.
-
NZ cricket awards just had the most tedious speech ever. Grant Robertson really is odious.

I don't know much about Waleed
The sit down aspect isn't so much what bothers me (although I can't recall sit downs after similar events overseas) as who/why the person was selected.

It's just clickbait, but in very poor taste. NZH lowering the bar then crawling under it again
