Midfield - an initial problem is that I don't clearly know who Fozzie thinks are second fives and who are centres. I don't really understand why he went from using 12. ALB; 13. Goodhue in 2019 to 12. Goodhue; 13. ALB in 2020. The former seemed to work significantly better to me. But now we've had 2021 without JG and are having 2022 without ALB; so we're still not learning the full story about Fozzie's plans. Now we've got a bunch of potential 2nd five options, who are either untried or haven't nailed the position; and Rieko and Goodhue who both seem like good options to play centre - but, still have a bit to prove at test level. And maybe Jack is Fozzie's second-five...

I think the only thing you've missed is....(grimace)....they have shown a liking for Ennor at centre. It won't surprise me in the least if they go back to him (even over Ioane). Sad Face.

I fucking hope not. Reiko is both in good form and has Test experience so I think he's nailed on for 13 as he's the safest option. My guess is Fozzie will go for experience and if Goodhue goes OK in SRP, it's be between him and QT for 12 with PUJ poss. as cover.

Is PUJ one of those guys who just gets better and better the more he doesn't play?

Not a crack at you Vic. But he keeps getting mentioned in dispatches but isn't in the top 3 (or is it 4?) midfielders in his Super team.

My bad - I got my UJ's confused. meant TUJ. Thomas, being younger, has probably more potential....

I think Jordie at 15 makes the most sense and QT or Goodhue at 12. In saying that if RTS keeps performing a BB, RTS, RI combo would work well considering they already play together.

What are QT's tackle stats? You can't carry Mo'unga and him in the important 10-12 channel. That's a recipe for disaster.

@Machpants TBF, if he indicated early on he was intending to leave, then I dont blame Holland.

I'm not saying he isnt a good player, I just think there is always a bit more to why things happen than the speculation here...

I honestly cannot see why Holland would not play him if he is the best in his squad when fit, unless there is somethign else.

I can see where you're coming from but this is the same coach with his unflushable plodders, who are awful to average, he picks over better performing players time and again. New players come on, play much better, then disappear to club rugby for their audacity showing up Prncep, Blackwell, et al. I have no faith in his selectorial skills, and if it wasn't for Ardie picking up and carrying the team to a win, canes would be below the landers.

@duluth PUJ was a well performing AB last year, Bailyn was an average wing for the Chiefs (IIRC) Bailyn has taken his chance, but he is not at the level PUJ was last year yet. If PUJ had the opportunities Bailyn has had, where could he be? We will never know 'cos Holland is random as fuck with his selections

PUJ makes breaks as good as any centre. I don't think he puts other players away as well as other centres. I also think he gets out of the team pattern on defence. Raw talent, yes. But he is far from the finished product

Bailyn is already a more complete centre IMO

@Duluth yeah I reckon Bailyn has a huge upside and wouldnt surprise me if he gets a chance in black this year.

Sullivan at 13 for the Maori All Blacks might be a really nice way to see how he matches up with test opposition.

He's a similar player to Ioane at 13. So that helps. The team pattern doesn't need to change if he comes in (as opposed to a Goodhue who has very different strengths)

    or can't employ them

I think that is more the issue...there were periods when our forwards have done well, then reverted to this passive style...so IMO it is more game plan or execution than skills or ability.

I'd add to that there's a head-space thing going on and that's been growing since 2016/7 - e.g. lack of steadiness under pressure. Signs it was getting better last year but those seemed to vanish on the EOYT and poss. not helped by changes to captaincy.

Which brings me to a conundrum: do we pick the best 6/7/8 combination and then choose a captain? Or do we give Sam the 7 slot even though Dalton P is a possibly better 7?

this is what ive been wondering about for ages....cane is great, no doubt....he just hasn't been available enough for the AB's, never a good start when the first name on the list has an * next to it

I put Sullivan as more of a cross between Ioane and Goodhue. A distribution game not unlike Goodhue and a running game not far off Ioane. Long may it continue.

Big fan of both the Sullivans.

I think my overall point is that I don't think Foster and co are just using an old pattern and crossing their fingers. They are trying things.

Can you give some examples of what they are trying?

    I did in my post.
Not a huge one but we saw a spell where, on defence (and forgive if my memory is failing) the D line was set but moving behind was TJP who would try and pick a charge forward from deep.
I think that the idea was that a normal 'rusher' creates risk of a gap to be exploited but a rusher not in the set line may disrupt or stall the attack pattern with less risk.
I hadn't seen that used as a tactic before and thought it was an interesting experiment.
Discarded or tucked away? I don't know.
Kick-pass was never in Hansen's book except as part of individual flair yet we have seen deliberate calls with inside runners knowing what to do to distract defenders or pull them in.

Have they shown wild innovation? Not really. But it's also not fair to say they are just rolling out old patterns as some on here claim.

He made the ABs and didn't look out of place. I'd say he's pretty handy.

    So did Charlie Ngatai.

    And then ascended into heaven

    Lyon? Gastronomic heaven, maybe?
