Would it be possible to have a separate thread/poll to discuss the next captain?

10 of the 11 players continuing on with the most caps are below in order. I excluded Moody as we haven't had a prop captain since Whinereay and it is unlikely to see another soon):

    Whitelock
    Aaron Smith
    B.Barrett
    Rettalick
    Coles
    Cane
    TJP
    Taylor
    Savea
    ALB

@taniwharugby No - and to be fair Chieka's seat is still warm. Hard to see that they would have run any sort of open recruitment process while he was still in place and without it being common knowledge.

That's solely because of a lack of leadership. I'd have drafted the call for applications in 2017 and sent it out immediately after the quarter final.

Is Whitelock available for the ABs next season? Him or Cane seem the obvious candidates. Taylor has probably edged past Coles as the starter otherwise Coles would be the third option. Cupboard pretty empty after that.

Dont ask me for reasons, but I reckon the list is only that big...Retallick might have been a consideration but he isnt playing at all next year is he?

Brodie has said he is a reluctant captain and is unavailable for the ABs until May 2021.

I think Whitelock will be the captain but he won't be around for more than 2 seasons so another captain will be needed before 2023.

You also need to choose a captain that won't be substituted which rules out hookers and halfbacks.

I saw enough of Whitelock leading the Crusaders for me to be happy with him as AB head.
A bit more old-school type of getting stuck into the troops while leading from the front.

    Has to be a forward

We had Fitzy as captain, you have Hooper - being a cock doesn't rule out someone from being captain.

Coles, more often than not, has the ability to lift the team. I would be concerned about his durability. Whitelock is an excellent player, is he a bit passive? A new coach that isn't from the group could mean anything is on the table

Jesus. Not many good options when you add in things like being on the field for the full 80, World Cup full cycle, etc

Has to be one of Cane or Whitelock, but will either be in the team in two years.

We have had to carry Read for the past few years thanks to injuries, hate to make that mistake again.

Might need to be a transitional captain while another player is groomed. None of the younger players would appear to be ready. And the new coach would be wise to avoid a Taine Randell situation

looking beyond say Whitelock or Cane, what players that have been on the radar might emerge as captains beyond the current team?

Jacobson? Papali'i? If he can ever stop breaking, Gibson?

Not alot of younger guys coming through in our key positions of loose forward or lock shaping up as poytential leaders?

Perhaps it is time to reconsider whether a captain can be appointed with an iron clad commitment to having them in the XV four years on? The problem is no one fits the age profile to do that. Coles perhaps? The way substitutions are used it could be a mixed bag.

Between the efforts on the weekend and his comments after re-signing with the NZRU Whitelock doesn't particularly inspire me as a skipper. Cane I'm neutral on. I weirdly think Barrett may thrive in the role in a weird way.

It is funny though - Robertson is the rockstar candidate who is going to shake everything up, but is hands down the most likely coach to appoint the obvious pick as captain.

The first place to look is the super captains.

    Blues - Tuipulotu/Gibson
    Chiefs - Cane
    Hurricanes - Coles
    Crusaders - Whitelock
    Highlanders - ???

Whoever it is needs to command their place in the starting XV too. I'd be comfortable to use Whitelock for 2020 and select his likely replacement as a VC. I wouldn't be worried about 2023 just yet.

Yeah, start with Whitelock and try out vice captains. next squad annoucement is going to be the most interesting in years.
