@rotated It's probably an error to think that there's any real template for success. It's more about the individual. Measuring success by winning World Cups, every one of our pro era Head Coaches had a failure - Henry and Hansen also won one.

After 2011, we've been sold a continuity template - and there's plenty to be said for not throwing the baby out with the bathwater - but, you still need to look at the individual. Continuity didn't work in 2019 and my jury at least is far from convinced about Fozzie.

Perhaps another point that shouldn't be missed is that the ex-players who are coming through now are sort of a second generation of pro player coaches. Guys who spent most of their professional playing careers in proper professional environments.

So I'd differentiate them from e.g. someone like Jeff Wilson who tinkered a bit, and a bit unsuccessfully, with coaching - but played 1992-2002, but even in his pro-era playing days was probably in environments where mainly the coaches were still feeling their way and learning what pro coaching was all about.

Edit: Clive Woodward can be added to Rassie.

Can we realistically be knocked out? Or are we in unless we see an Inzamam Ul Huq type innings?

60 off 37 doesn’t really cut it in today’s game.

Also tiny boundaries and Harris and Larsen bowling. Please

Mate don't come at me with your facts and figures.

Inzi's taking the game away from us in '92 was the single greatest innings in an ODI bar none. FACT.

🤔 dunno... I'm having a hard time picking between Ponting and Gilchrist. We're taking about innings in a CWC final, right?

Nah we're talking greatest ODI innings of all time. FACT!

    Ponting, then.

@antipodean that is some very tough marking.

But pretty much true. Eddie virtually admitted as much during an evening audience with him. From the word go he was targeting NZ in RWC 2019. It was the same in 2003 and both times it worked but maybe came a game too early.

I think the opening line of the vid summed it up well - he’s the master of the upset.

I wonder if he thought to himself (secretly) that he could afford to do that because England would have enough talent to beat whoever made it to the final from the other side of the draw without giving them as much focus as the All Blacks (certainly a year out I thought that might be his approach just looking at the way draw was likely to pan out)

@shark And yet we still missed the playoffs that year. I remember the Stormers putting 50 on us at Eden Park that year. We really did underachieve that year and should have pushed for another title with the side we had.

@voodoo Might be better down there. Had an email about QT today as well and they are hopeful of some good snow fall this week. How many lifts operate will be interesting.

*We’re stoked to be back on the mountains and gearing up for opening Coronet Peak on June 26 and The Remarkables on July 4. Work on the new Sugar Chairlift is charging ahead and we’re getting pretty excited with the forecast for early next week!

While Covid-19 requirements continue to change we are adapting our planning for the season as your Health & Safety remains our number one priority. You can read about our level 2 operations and updates for winter 2020 here, keep checking back as we regularly update this page. We will be flexible throughout the season and consider scaling up our operations if there is demand.*

Doing special prices for 3 peak passes as well.

A different breed and generation. Tiny Hill was a lock but at 1.88 m and 94kg was shorter and lighter than Rieko.

Backlines now , probably look as big if not bigger than forwards in that era,

I remember as a kid in the late 70s reading the player stats, the heaviest guys in the team were usually the props at 16 stone , that’s 101 kgs

Plenty of tough, hard buggers in those days. And size doesn't come into it.

Red Conway of that era was 86kg and 5' 9" and seriously hard, Had a finger amputated so he go on tour to SA in 1960. Grant Batty at 70kg and 5' 5" was an equally hard bastard. You just can't get away with the sort of stuff they did back then.

Sad, as BBBT would have been in his own personal heaven.

...Elvidge needed four stitches to his forehead, and one arm hung loose from a damaged collarbone, but he returned to the turf of Athletic Park.

The Otago second five-eight moved out to the wing and scored the winning try.

He had also scored in the first test on his Carisbrook home ground.

Elvidge never played for New Zealand again.

My memory of the game is pretty minimal,” he told the NZ Herald in 2017.

    Have to love that quote.

Looks like he had a very dry sense of humour, theres some footage of him playing here

The players that would make my list are the ones who when they got the ball you were off your seat in anticipation of what would happen next.

Of the names not mentioned yet, I would add Sivivatu.

Joeli Vidiri too. He was sensational in the Blues early years.

Hey what about that lock that chased down a winger. Bet you don't remember the names.

Your obsession with everything I've ever posted ( and the fact you even remember it ) is creepy as fuck.

I like this part, but I doubt they'd pull the pin:

."We have put him on notice that we expect change," Impey said. "He's made the right noises, but he's now got to deliver. "If he doesn't deliver that, a whole new debate, and [it] will certainly test the relevance of World Rugby if nothing happens.

Good move. Modern posts are way bigger than their predecessors which means this law was outdated.

@Tim said in Lincoln McClutchie article:

@Bones Michael Little is a good counter-example to the idea that the best players are signed into Super Rugby squads. He was much better than many midfield players in NZ squads (especially at the Blues), but had to go to Japan to get a full contract.

With Little it was a poor Blues organisation missing out, perhaps McClutchie has missed out at the Highlanders due to their pretty average coaches?

Considering we have an excellent first five (All Black) and a very good backup, I don't think we missed out. He would have been lucky to get game time.

TBH, I don't think HB fans were expecting him to go to the Highlanders, and we have few issues with Otago and the Highlanders, they're generally always happy to have players from our region.
