Especially when you consider our annual murder rate hasn't been above 50 since 2008. Over a years worth of murders in just a couple hours. Insane.

Oh it is only the beginning.. it was only a few weeks ago.. you were saying that NZ women wearing Hijabs was a sign of respect...
And I stand by that. Heather Du Plessis Allen wrote an article I felt was in line with my position. Wearing the hijab immediately after the massacre was a sign of respect for the dead and I think was reasonable. Prolonged wear I'm not okay with, but getting into a discussion about the hijab as a sign of women's oppression within days of the event was IMHO not the right time. Of course we are bound to disagree on that one, but if you view the garment as a symbol of the muslim faith oppressing women then I'm in agreement with that
It's not a symbol of the Muslim faith. It's not even mentioned anywhere in the Koran or Haddith. It's just a tool males have used to oppress women, and those Muslim feminists that were deeply offended by the "gesture" had every right to be. Our PM that calls herself a feminist as well should have known better.
Poor old Jacinda was fucked either way though, if she didn't wear it any number of critics would have had a go at her for that too.
I think Jacinda has come out of this glowingly in terms of overall public perception of her. I would be interested in her polling before and after the attacks?
Yep she has, even some of my real hard out right wing FB mates made mention of this which to me says it all. She's been awesome.
Really? Not sure she has done anything that I'd expect any Prime Minister to do. Other than wear a hijab. Not sure it would have suited John Key...

Well she showed up in my instagram feed which is a first for a NZ prime minister

I kind of go both ways on the hijab thing.
I'm very much in the camp of taking things at face value and a subset of people are going to find a way to get offended by anything.
Then again this is a government whose first order of business was to amend what was a fairly vanilla parliamentary prayer, and then paraded about an openly Islamic prayer to open parliament last week. This is a leader that actively sees everything through the lens of identity politics, so it's always a temptation to argue against them on that level.
-
@rotated imo. She had her image in mind throughout it all. She's always got her image in mind. She's inexperienced and not an example of any type of effective leader as her performance so far attests. She's a product of the look at me generation. Waleed, can I give you a hug? Why?

Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a.k.a. “The man.” They really don’t want to name this guy, do they?
-
@Siam does that water down any genuine empathy or leadership on her part? Or that she's developing as a leader where her prior track record wasn't that flash. I think there has been a fair amount of 'look at me' across generations, it's just that the more recent waves have the technology and access to really highlight it. And Jacinda has nothing on our current crop of young'uns.

IMO It'd be bloody great if someone started a separate topic about Jacinda's insincerity or how white males are the real victims and all the other politicisation of this thread
Agree, it’s a topic worth discussing. I’m talking about Arderns behaviour when there’s an international audience- see Grace Milane and how few fucks she gave about the kids that were abused at the Labour youth retreat . I think she handled this in a far more dignified manner apart from the hijab although o think there’s a protocol for women covering their heads in a mosque the similar to taking off your shoes before entering a Marae.
The white men are the real victims claim is a tad odd , I don’t think I’ve seen anyone say that

I hope so .
Is it just me or are the pro gun lobby their own worst enemies? If Tipple is the face of it they are screwed , a quick search of the guys name shows he’s a nut job .
Also since we are talking about pointless virtue signalling Fish and Game coming out in support of banning semi autos was all about good pr for them and not much else . Trout fishermen and game bird hunters are known to use an ar 15 much in pursuit of their prey .

It was an easy decision because it had no financial downside and 'moral' upside

I have a mate in the legal profession that knows Jacko. Says she's generally a really nice person. He also harboured doubts about her and Labour's ability to govern. But based on that I'd say her intentions in this instance were more genuine than calculated

I've made a couple of not-so-subtle digs at Jacinda proclaiming herself a feminist but seeming to not understand the history of the Hijab as a tool to oppress women around the world. That dig is more a dig at so many feminists in the west, who appear to not give the slightest bit of a fuck about any women that are not "western" in their eyes.
And the reason for that is Intersectionality - because Muslims rate highly in the intersectional oppression scorecard, they are loathe to criticise anything about them, including Islam and anything related despite it being one of THE biggest issues that feminists should be tackling right now. It really is a toxic brand of "feminism" that Jacinda and so many like her subscribe to.

What a stupid post.
This topic has been politicised by the media and politicians... and as for white males? You are trying to hard. -

I’d even go so far as to say exploited.
Blood was rushing to Matthew Hooton’s brain this morning as he excitedly typed out a commentary in the Herald imploring Jacinda to call a snap election because she’ll never be more popular. He wants her to strike while the iron is still hot.
Sadly reminds me of the gleeful PNAC warmongers who got their “catalyzing event” when planes slammed into skyscrapers.
Exploiting a political advantage out of a tragedy is cynical, but not unprecedented.
