The battle cinematography was by and large brilliant.

Did we watch a different episode? 😉 I found the fight cinematography to be average - before even getting into the stupidity of the defence of Winterfell. The Dothraki charge was the best bit of cinematography in the whole battle and also the stupidest scene in terms of the defence.

Agree on the Arya in the library scene though.

Also, how fucking tense was that episode? Action aplenty, but there was times i was fucking stressed. The Library with Arya was awesome.

Then, as shit got worse and worse, i got more and more wound up. Jon's the hero, the hero needs to save everyone, but he's trapped because he needs to get past a goddam undead dragon! Fuck, just run fluffybunny! Come on!! the clock is ticking!

Fuck that was some good film making.

I was literally shaking for the first part of the episode
Had no idea how it would play out, the timing and structure I thought were perfectly executed at the start.
Plus will we ever see dragons on tv or film in such a fucking way again? Seeing Drogon shaking off the wights as they climbed all over him.
The books will never be beaten for depth and story telling but you won’t outdo the visuals that the tv show has pulled off.
Never be a tv show like this again.. well hopefully the prequel series will live up to this

Pffft, the Mandalorian will shit over it.

When half the viewers are complaining about the lightening and a bunch can’t tell who’s dead or alive then clearly the cinematography isn’t outstanding.

Most of the previous GOT large scale battles, he’ll even most of the large scale battles in Vikings are better.

Yeah now you mention it the Battle of the Bastards and the one where Bronn shoots the dragon are probably better due to considerably better lighting.....definitely more ‘replay’ value

I think what they wanted to show was the confusion wrought in pitched battle, particularly one at night. If this was their intent, they did it excellently.

In terms of lighting and disorientation, it set the scene well, reminding me what it's like when you've got bugger all light to see with - almost as if you're canyoning.

Sure it's theoretically easy having shaky camera and quick perspective edits, but it's another thing to do it well.

I dont think half are complaining, I think it is just a few who need better TV's or learn how to adjust the brightness level on the TVs they have.
I think Battle of Bastards was better, I think the battle of the Lannisters vs Daenerys was better, I think battle of Blackwater was worse as it was smaller scale.. and also at night which people complained about..... you think they would ave found the brightness dial in the 5 years they had between ...
As for Vikings battles.. you are joking surely?

I think hardware, network speed and environment plays a big part in how 'good' the visuals were.
I originally ran it on a usb drive plugged into a laptop with an hdmi to the TV, it meant I could use my wireless earphones but the visuals weren't great. Running direct off of the USB into the TV made a big difference. I couldn't imagine watching it during the day. Darkness was the point, it emphasised the light. Definitely one to re-watch on bluray. In a way its good to get the dark fight out of the way so the final fight should be in light and easier to deal with.

While I take your point I don’t think they did it outstandingly and I don’t feel they made the best use of available light (from the fires etc) when they had it, but I wonder if that was due to that being added in post via effects?

I thought the dragon scenes were the poorest though.

I can see WHY they filmed it like they did, but I felt they still could have made it a little lighter. I have an HD TV, watched it in the dark, changed the brightness settings on my TV, I just felt it was a bit dark, that said, so many film/tv scenes are filmed in dark moody type scenes, that and making effects sounds much louder than talking.

It was a little dark, but not that bad IMO.

@Kirwan Haha your answer to everything - magic

The girl can transform into other people and fight people blind. Magic is the obvious answer regarding this character.

And as others have said, Dragons, two characters brought back from the dead, zombies, a woman who can light things on fire and hide her true form, and a guy that can warg Into other creatures.

Magic is the answer to most things on this show.

Iguess they didn't want us to learn anything about the NK, cos isn't the first prequel about how he became the big bad?

Or the twist is Bran is the NK. So many theories out there, it’s been fun to read.

One was the NK was about to lay down his sword to Bran, not kill him. Would explain why he did fuck all in this episode except site see

Someone pointed out that the NK turns babies, dragons, etc by touching them and he touched Bran.

    From Fox sports Au.

    Winterfell XV Player Ratings

    1. Samwell Tarly — 2.0

Forgettable performance from a guy who talked a big game in the lead-up to match day. Openly bragged about being ‘the first bloke to kill a whitewalker’ last week, then went to mud in the warm-up. Much more expected from the big loosehead assuming he gets a start in coming rounds.

    1. Tyrion Lannister — 1.0

Went against team code by getting hammered on cheap wine the night before the game. Hangover showed as he was rendered impotent against a more physical and hungrier outfit. Unable to offer up his customary niggle and stirring speeches on account of being too busy sweet talking Sansa. A bad look in every way for a player trying to work his way back into form. Massive improvement required.

    1. Lord Varys — 0.5

Where do we start with the 125kg eunuch? Only kept on the park by the coaching team in the hope he’d deliver a touch of brilliance in the closing stages. Offered nothing in attack and could only huddle in defence. Looks certain to be dropped after this woeful effort.

    1. The Hound — 5.0

Was late to the frontline of battle and it showed. Appeared distracted at times and went completely missing for a large part of the second half. Redeemed himself by doing an exceptional job of babysitting his flyhalf to help set up the match-winning drop goal.

    1. Brienne of Tarth — 9.0

Crushed multiple wights with a willingness to mix it up at maul time. Continues to win new fans with her abrasive approach and will be one of the first picked for their next fight. Also saved the one-armed man’s life, will be popular on Mad Monday.

    1. Theon Greyjoy — 9.0

Five-star performance from a guy looking to redeem himself under the guidance of Coach Stark. Dropped countless wights with a bow and arrow, then took to the advancing horde with a spear. Ordinarily a performance like this would gain Theon a spot in the starting team for life. Shame he’s dead, killed with his own spear. Irony for the Ironborn.

    1. Grey Worm — 8.0

Since entering the Winterfell XV Pathway Program, Grey Worm has been ultra-disciplined and always looked likely to provide the sort of output to win a big one. Clutch in every way, Mr Worm led his side over the ball and was a menace in the scrap.

    1. Tormund Giantsbane — 7.0

Carried strong, ever reliable red-head went hard again . Simple man with a simple game plan.

    1. Lyanna Mormont — 9.0

Lady Mormont has excelled at Scrumhalf. Despite battling a crushed rib cage and dislocated spine, Lyanna still found a way to drop the biggest bloke on the park. Sadly, this will be her final game in the Winterfell XV after being unable to overcome the aforementioned injuries. She also fell 60 feet. Bear Island Rugby Club in particular will be rocked.

    1. Arya Stark — 10.0

At times, a one-woman demolition crew. Has always promised a flawless 82 minute performance and on her home track, was a cut above. Put a marker down early in the match by icing double-digit wights and she never looked back. Won the game following a half-time rev up from Melisandre. Total perfection from the assassin.

    1. Jamie Lannister — 7.5

Hung tough with his one working arm. Like Theon, was chasing redemption. Unlike Theon, Jamie will be back again next week.

    1. Jon Snow — 4.0

Didn’t adapt to the conditions, went looking for dominance late but never really figured.

    1. Melisandre — 8.5

Surprise packet in this must-win match up. Late inclusion in the starting team and made a statement early by turning normal swords into flaming ones. Result was minimal as everybody carrying one was ripped limb from limb, but her play added much needed spark. Also provided visionary chat to MVP Arya before collapsing in a heap out the front. Big loss.

    1. Daenerys Targaryen — 5.0

Struggled to get into the game. Only highlight was burning a bunch of the undead with her dragons. Lucky to get through the full 82 and needs a big week at training.

    1. Sir Jorah — 8.5

Played until the final whistle, making it back to back golden performances from the love-struck swordsman. Another to have played their final game for this improving outfit.

    Coach: Bran Stark — 5.0

Checked out of the battle for a long while, only returning to tell Theon he was a good man. Sat emotionless as sister Arya plunged her Valeryian Steel dagger into the Night King’s midriff, preventing the end of the world in the process. Had a hand in the game plan and was happy to be bait. Winning is a habit and Bran will be better for it when they hit King’s Landing.

Great episode, but the over-darkness thing really annoyed me. Sure, I can watch it at night / turn TV brightness right up, but why should I have to do this? If you're going to wank on about the time / cost / numbers involved in the #mostepictvbattleever then why make it so hard to see? Blah blah "atmosphere"? Dickheads.

The Arya/library scene was corny, they've just sacked a near-impregnable castle, the zombies are going to be busy charging around murdering people, not shuffling quietly in an otherwise empty part. Hound-spiration was great as was the pep talk with the Red babe. Taking down the Night King was awesome, I like that it wasn't 100% the prophecy. For those wondering how she snuck up on the NK, she's a faceless assassin who can do magic, and she grew up in Winterfell, of course she could. Cool that the dagger went full circle from being used in Bran's assassination attempt to killing Littlefinger and now this.

Glad that the White Walker thing is over, zombie/death/climate change stuff is not as interesting as the human politics and seeing who wins the throne.

Jon Snow is an idiot when it comes to military strategy, charging straight at the Night King. Almost as bad as his non-use of the giant Wun Wun in the Battle of the Bastards. Glad to see zombie Wun Wun come back and wreck some people, before annoying little Mormont girl eye-stabbed him. Dany is useless with her dragons, less flying around aimlessly / more burning ground troops please.

I could barely see most of the dragon aerial battle due to the aforementioned darkness, but did Rhaegal (Jon's dragon) survive? I assumed both that one and the ice-dragon Viserion were hurt, hence they both lost their riders, and the ice dragon couldn't fly thereafter but still did some damage with blue flames on the ground. If Dany is the only one left with a functioning dragon, then that's important looking fwd to who wins the throne, if Jon and her ever had to square off for it.

Why couldn't the Night King be killed by direct dragon flame if other wights / White Walkers could? But he still died immediately when pricked in the midriff by a Valyrian steel dagger? Isn't Valyrian steel forged in dragonfire / derived from dragon magic? Seems illogical.

Did all the Dothraki come over to Westeros with Dany (and then die)? Or did she leave some in Essos, like the women and children? It would be sad if that entire race/culture was expended as cannon fodder.

Edit: apparently Rhaegal appears in Episode 4 trailer so he's all good.

I know it is fantasy but that should really only apply to the characters/elements in play not the tactics/decision making.

Jon Snow - makes Field Marshall Haig look like Ghengis Khan. Why anyone would follow this numpty's battle plans is way beyond me. We need fire, valerian steel and dragonglass to defeat these things so let our first move be to send cavalry with normal swords against them before they are weakened. Then we will place our part time infantry in the way with our disciplined units at the rear. By the way, we also know that their head dude can turn all the dead bodies he collects against us so this plan of sacrifice is the best.

Dragon Bitch - I will appear only once the foot fight is underway and the armies are mixed together. That way I can get a bit of friendly fire in.
Also, I will be responsible for lighting the defence trench so you better hope I am around.

What they needed was double defences and a feint attack to draw the zombies forward and against the ditches. Once there, fry as many as possible with sweeping dragon fire and have Dothraki backing up from behind beheading another layer.
Once the defences were breached use the unsullied and archers to target the breach points.

Anyway, I'm sure the storyline will now somehow find masses of survivors to attack King's Landing. The only ones we are aware of are the navy plus those from the Iron Islands not with Euron. My suspicion is a double play from the bank who will turn the sell-swords against Cersei. This is either pre planned or Tyrion will engineer it.
