As a motorcyclist I'm pretty pedantic about signalling my intention to other road users.

Car drivers who want to turn right across two lanes of traffic at rush hour with no turning lane. Usually it takes a minute or two before they give up and move on, as if it's a surprise that RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IS HEAVY. Ah, the joys of big city living

Rarely have that problem in the UK as people will almost always flash/stop to let you turn. We all moan, but UK drivers are generally pretty considerate.

It's the fluffybunnies who still won't turn when flashed who give me the shits....

Sorry, but I have experienced too many times when the “flasher” hasn’t actually thought out anything except creating a gap themselves. You pull out with little visibility and encounter a traffic from your left or a lane splitting motorbike or scooter coming from your right.
I’d rather decide when it is safe to pull out myself. If it isn’t obviously clear or I can’t edge out to see then I don’t move.
This is 10x worse if you are a cyclist. Pricks flash at you and put you in really dangerous positions

Which bit of the explanation did you ignore? One person flashing at you doesn't mean the intersection is safe.

@antipodean depends which way they are turning, if they are travelling the same way as you, then you creating the gap means it is pretty safe, against the flow I come to a stop if I can see the opposite road is clear too, otherwise I'd not flash them to come out if the opposite side is still flowing.

There's plenty of examples on this YouTube channel of cars being left a gap and flowing into oncoming traffic they can't see. I've witnessed it myself numerous times. Even a car turning right across one lane of traffic can impact a cyclist or motorcycle neither cage driver can see. It's dangerous.

Happened to our nanny a year ago. She was driving our kids, turning right across 2 lanes into a car park on the other side of the road. Car in the lane next to her waved her across, and she went, got plowed into by a car in the 2nd lane, that neigltherbhad seen.

Car was written off, luckily nobody was seriously hurt. She and the kids were VERY shaken up though, as you'd imagine.

Flashing isn't supposed to be about telling you it's safe to go. The person flashing is telling you they are giving you the space to turn if you think it is safe to do so. The responsibility is still on you to make sure there is no more through traffic.

Tell that to the idiots that get all antsy when you wave a “thanks but no thanks” at them.
The point is that in that situation you can’t actually tell how safe it is until pulling out.
Sometimes you can just straddle that one lane until you can see more but sometimes (esp in UK) you have to edge into the opposite lane just to be able to see.

Maybe we all need a diagram so all on the same page?

I am always disappointed in the lack of awareness people have when driving. I have lost count of the crashes I have been to with this scenario.

There is a responsibility on the through traffic as well. If you are in one lane and the other lane has stopped and is leaving a gap for turning traffic, don't plough on through oblivious to the possibility someone will turn in front of you. It's not rocket science. Motorcyclists can be particularly ignorant of this when they are lane splitting, which is astounding given how vulnerable they are.

Turning into a lane of traffic has heaps less risk than turning across one.

Of course. That scenario holds little risk and the gesture is appreciated.

My comments are all about turning across traffic i.e. imagine coming from a side road onto a main road and turning right. The car that has created the gap is coming from your right and insisting that you 'come out' because they are being nice and stopping for you. If the traffic is built up your visibility to the left (other lane) is impeded as is any visibility of lane splitting bikes from your right.

The onus is still on you to be safe. Therefore I will often not move (which @Victor-Meldrew thinks is a fluffybunny move)
