There's plenty of examples on this YouTube channel of cars being left a gap and flowing into oncoming traffic they can't see. I've witnessed it myself numerous times. Even a car turning right across one lane of traffic can impact a cyclist or motorcycle neither cage driver can see. It's dangerous.
Happened to our nanny a year ago. She was driving our kids, turning right across 2 lanes into a car park on the other side of the road. Car in the lane next to her waved her across, and she went, got plowed into by a car in the 2nd lane, that neigltherbhad seen.
Car was written off, luckily nobody was seriously hurt. She and the kids were VERY shaken up though, as you'd imagine.

Sometimes you can just straddle that one lane until you can see more but sometimes (esp in UK) you have to edge into the opposite lane just to be able to see.Maybe we all need a diagram so all on the same page?

I am always disappointed in the lack of awareness people have when driving. I have lost count of the crashes I have been to with this scenario.
There is a responsibility on the through traffic as well. If you are in one lane and the other lane has stopped and is leaving a gap for turning traffic, don't plough on through oblivious to the possibility someone will turn in front of you. It's not rocket science. Motorcyclists can be particularly ignorant of this when they are lane splitting, which is astounding given how vulnerable they are.

Of course. That scenario holds little risk and the gesture is appreciated.
My comments are all about turning across traffic i.e. imagine coming from a side road onto a main road and turning right. The car that has created the gap is coming from your right and insisting that you 'come out' because they are being nice and stopping for you. If the traffic is built up your visibility to the left (other lane) is impeded as is any visibility of lane splitting bikes from your right.
The onus is still on you to be safe. Therefore I will often not move (which @Victor-Meldrew thinks is a fluffybunny move)
