    A bit of a miracle he lived this long, considering his injuries. The movie Rush was excellent with Lauda as one of the main characters

    There was a lot of bullshit in that film , him and Hunt were apparently mates and even flatted together at one stage .

    Hard bastard tho, refusing to have his ears reconstructed so he could get back racing faster, trying to race with his eyelids (from behind the ear skin) working but no tear ducts - couldn't blink!

    Remember reading after his accident that his lungs would fill and the pain would recede. At that point, realising he was dying he'd ring the bell for them to pump him out and that would bring searing pain. Tough hombre.

    He raced again only a few weeks after the accident didn't he? Absolutely amazing fella. Sad that he's gone but I bet every day was a bonus.

    What did Niki Lauda and Hotlips Houlihan have in common?

    They were both fucked by Major Burns.

    @jegga

    Think it was Lauda himself who spoke the last tribute to James Hunt in that film. I've read they were good friends as well
