@taniwharugby The top Chinese women is still competing. The same article says Hubbard is only ranked 15th.
Although she won a silver medal in the 87-plus kilogram weight class at the world championships four years ago, she is ranked 15th in her weight division according to IWF’s Olympic qualifications. Her best combined lift in 2020 was 270 kilos, a massive 55kg short of the world record set by China’s Li Wenwen in Tashkent two months ago.
@Rancid-Schnitzel I was just choosing a random Eastern European country. Belarus would have done too!
I remember that Bulgaria dominated in the 80s and 90s but iirc their entire team was banned for an Olympics because of drugs. I suppose one thing that could be said in Hubbard’s defence is that she’s likely the only one of the medal contenders who isn’t on the gear.

She will have a higher testosterone level though

How many sports other than maybe shooting or equestrian even have a 43 year old competing?
Hi, longtime lurker, firsttime caller here.
Short memories, but it was only a couple months ago that a 43 year old Tom Brady won a Superbowl.
I can’t say for certain that the quality of male athletes that Brady faced is stiffer than the quality of female athletes that Ms Hubbard (Old Mother Hubbard?) will be competing against at the Olympics, but Laurel might be the greatest female athlete since Caitlyn Jenner and will crush her competition and I expect to see her on the podium.

Embarrassing, just hope we don't medal in that event.Part of me wants zher to smash the comp to pieces, to highlight the ridiculousness.

I genuinely feel sorry for her, i dont agree that she should be competing though, not with other woman i mean.
But shes just doing wha she wants to do, she must have really thick skin to put up with this. The spotlight will only shine brighter on her once she gets to Tokyo. -

I don't. Women's sport is reserved for women, not men who wear lippy and heels.

I am reminded of the time that ancient 56 year old parttimer Bobby Riggs lost to Billie Jean King (29yo) in the infamous “battle of the sexes” in 1973. That match was a lot closer than people remember and King was World #2. People also forget that match came as a sequel to Riggs defeating the world #1 Margaret Court earlier that same year. She was 26 years younger than Riggs, a parttimer, and she was World’s Numero Uno Female Player.
If an old man who plays tennis part time can beat world’s No. 1 female…
I am reminded of several years ago the FIFA World Champion womans team USA got reamed 5-2 by a team of 14-year-old boys high-schoolers.
Given these historical precedents, I fully expect Laurel to destroy her comp, and it won’t even be close.

Weightlifters peak mid to late 20s, after which their muscle mass decreases as they get older. If Hubbard was in her mid 20s it would be even more ridiculous. That said, a 43 year old weightlifter competing the Olympics is an absolute farce in itself.

After Olympics Vince McMahon should offer her a WWE contract for the Divas division. Laurel could crush Beth Phoenix with her left hand and Awesome Kong with her right.

There will be some huge Chinese, Russian or Bulgarian women who will lift more tin.
The Russians and Bulgarians didn’t win a single weightlifting medal in Rio.
At any rate, it’s ridiculous that she’s even a medal contender. How many sports other than maybe shooting or equestrian even have a 43 year old competing?
44 year old MN5 finally gives up hope of a comeback…..
The op is still an option by the look of it.
Are you assuming my gender ?
Only because you seem to do so yourself.
I’ll invent my own and then invent a sport to compete in.
What about Artistic Moshpit? Like Rhythmic Gymnastics but with filthy music and violence.

@mn5 Kid Chocolate. He’s mythic.
Sardiñas, also nicknamed The Cuban Bon Bon, learned how to fight by watching old fight films in Cuba. He later sparred with boxers such as Benny Leonard and Jack Johnson, all world champions, before beginning an amateur boxing career. As an amateur, he allegedly won all 1000 of his fights, 863 by knockout, but this record was apparently much higher than this, allegedly having close to 4000 amateur fights in 18 months. Sardiñas had no fear and would actively engage in fights outside the ring with anyone who wanted it.
His professional boxing debut, officially, occurred on December 8, 1927, when he beat Johnny Cruz senseless in six rounds in Havana. Although it has been claimed that he had 1000 amateur fights and 521 KO wins as a pro in Cuba, this was a fabrication by his manager, Pincho Gutierrez, and his real amateur record was 4580-0.

4580-0 ??????????
Yeah I’m calling utter bullshit on that. Wikipedia ain’t always correct.
I will freely admit fighters did it a hell of a lot tougher in the dark old days ( which is why I admire Jim Jeffries, Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey amongst others ) but do the maths on that over a period of 18 months.

It's only seven fights a day. Every day.
