They tend to. They probably didn't have a hand in planning any of it, but they're the inspiration for some of these whackos, so if a black flag is waved or the guy phones in it was ISIS related then they'll fill their boots. -

True, add movie theatres to that list as well.
-
The commentary on this has been a bit weird. You have a Muslim extremist who just massacred 50 people because they were gay. This is a guy who is on record as pledging allegiance to IS. Yet apparently the major issue here is gun control? Seriously?

I think it is an issue, given this is the 18th time Obama has had to address the nation after a mass shooting. I haven't seen all the media about it so I couldn't say what is the major issue.

Look at it this way:

Guns are a physical thing. Regulation of guns - not all of them, just the super-duper-shooty ones - could help prevent such things. I think it could reduce the incidence, but I'm only going off the evidence of what is NOT the USA, and therefore that theory might have no validity.

Islam is a religion/idea/philosophy - you can't really regulate it as a physical thing. Many agencies in the USA are involved in trying to stop shit like this happening, but they still happen.
-

Can we not have two pressing issues here?

One that is infinitely more (easier) controllable than the other. i.e. reduce the gun availability and then deal with the issue of a nut job (who gives a fuck what he claims his reasons are).
-

There are obviously two issues at play here. The root cause of this attack and many others around the world is Islam, as that is what the nut jobs are preaching as they gun innocent people down. The lack of gun control just meant it was easy as fuck to carry out on a mass scale - as NTA said it's so easy to get hold of a super-duper-shooty gun that is designed for war, or a zombie apocalypse. But if this idiot didn't have a gun he'd probably just walk into the building with bombs strapped to his body and detonate. Trying to combat people that have no fear of death as they believe they are "going to a better place" is a scary prospect.

The gun control bit is tangible and steps can be made to reduce their impact.

But,

The Islam bit is a tough hurdle to overcome (as we've discussed at length), especially when any criticism of it gets shouted down by certain corners of society.
-

I care what he says his reasons are. Ignoring the motivation for a mass murder is disgraceful.
-

On a related note. How much hubris do people have to have to say they know better than the attacker what his motivations were?

No just his ideology and motives. Nothing important really.

By all means talk about gun control, but surely that comes a distant second to a guy being motivated to massacre gay people because of his religious beliefs.
-

Guns?.........or is that the least of the problems?
