the best thing a parent can teach a kid is not abstinence or enforced limits, but moderation and consequences.

Yes - while the account is locked down, we long ago stopped the process of trying to stop the kids spending their money.

If the boy wants something off the PS4 store, he hands me the cash and I enter the password. If he doesn't have the cash, no purchase.

But what do those pencil-necked propeller heads know?

It was on my late wife's CC. She was the tech person and I had no idea that only a password was required to buy anything.

My wife is in the same boat - if I wasn't around, she'd have little to no idea how the house works.

I've clued in a good mate of mine about the tehcnology landscape of our place. He's smart enough to take it from there.

    Grooming a replacement?

@NTA yea TR Jnr is the same.

Then when he asks for real life tangible items I point him to his PS4 and say you have no money left, remember.

We were sitting at dinner discussing the screen time thing, as one of the kids informed us her friends don't have a TV in their house, and no devices except the parents' phones which are used for communication and not much else.

Mrs TA pipes up with "And that is probably a good thing, as you kids spend too much time in front of a screen"

I paused, and mentioned an article pointing to research that showed the best way to get kids off their screens was for the parents to spend less time on them as well. Icy silence from the woman who falls asleep to rubbish TV on her iPad at night. 😉

My boys both got Chromebooks for Xmas from myself and ex wife and her hubby....personally I thought it was a slightly over the top present but I didn't want to be the "stink" dad so I went along with it.

Yet despite all this my oldest still insists on grabbing mine and seeing how far back it will bend ?

Fucken moron, if he breaks that then I can't work and afford to pay his Mum child support then he'll have to sell his PS4, PS2 and everything else just to make ends meet.

Apparently device light like iPads etc are the stimulate rather than relax so it should have opposite effect.

I disagree. I've fallen asleep from time to time while on iPad or phone and woken when the device fell on my face. I'll do myself harm one day

    I'm a device fall asleeper.

I had really bad insomnia (falling asleep, I'm all good once I'm asleep) from my late teens through to my mid 30s. I tried all the methods sleep experts suggest - the patterns before bed etc to tell your body to get ready for sleep ... but they didn't work and I just couldn't shut my brain down.

However once I got a laptop and started watching sitcom episodes I'd already seen then bang I just started being able to fall asleep - I guess because all though I was watching I wasn't fully concentrating and my brain did shut down.

Although, I guess I'm using part of what the experts suggest (the pattern) and part of what they advise against and it works for me so I'm going to keep doing it.

That's my Fern therapy for the day.

Kids do spend too much on devices and are definitely addicted to them, adults probably need to take more of a role of setting the correct example.

On a totally unrelated note I upgraded my phone this week, loving my new iPhone XR.
The battery life is awesome, I can literally waste hours every day on this thing.
    Love it

As with all fern threads this one has taken an odd turn!!

Ms 2 enjoys a bit of muppet babies on the big screen and bounce patrol on YouTube is fricking baby crack. Limited amounts but we are both aware that she sees us on our phones, or doing work or gaming on pc. Generally we do that when shes asleep. So never lol

Implemented password protection on all the platforms as soon as they were stood up. Kids don't get to buy shit without say-so.

    The Mother-In-Law was another matter.

I was pulled into a false sense of security because they had access from a young age to kid friendly games.

That changed the day I woke up to 20 email alerts for fucking vbucks in Fortnite. Must happen so often that MS have an almost automated refund of those sort of purchases.

    Passwords on everything now.
