Bran was used as bait during the battle. It seemed to be the consensus that they were fucked and that their only hope was taking out the NK. Why then just guard Bran with a couple of archers? What was the plan exactly? It was only by dumb luck that Ayra ended up there at the right time.

@Frank said in GOT - there will be spoilers:

I feel like this show is becoming a bit average.

    Question:
Was there any foreshadowing whatsoever that the Hound would have a panic attack in the middle of the battle with the Undead? (seemed unrealistic that he, of all people, would freak out)

Yeah, it was the fire. He freaked out just like that at the battle of Blackwater as well. Because his brother held his face in the fire when they were kids.

I have a theory that Dany might actually win and crush everyone else. Seems like a GRRM move. She will change from freeing everyone into being just another mad Targaryan on the throne, the twist will be that all this was just so that the Targaryans could get the Iron Throne back.
The more things change the more they stay the same scenario....

@Virgil said in GOT - there will be spoilers:

While I’ve enjoyed this final season on the whole it still hasn’t reached the heights I expected.
They gave themselves nearly 2 years to end this and probably all but an unlimited budget. Yet in many areas it comes across rushed and illogical. They are cutting corners, some characters have been underused. There’s still over 2 and 1/2 hours nearly 3 hours left. Maybe they have been holding back and it will all make sense in the end but I don’t hold much hope.
    What’s the point of Bran?
Bronn appeared. Threatened Jamie and Tyrion then was gone.
Is it that hard to include Ghost a little more?

D&D seemed better suited at working from grrm original work and making it work on tv. But since the tv show left the books behind you get a sense they are making it up as they go.
The show was better too when grrm was on board as a writer.

You can’t fault it as a spectacle, it’s acting it’s music but the writing...

That's been painfully obvious since Season 5. It's easy to get distracted by the action and excitement, but the series really is a total mess. Blame the fat pervert for that.

The battle tactics in E3 were monumentally shit. Let's just let our entire cavalry charge into the dark and get slaughtered. Let's not protect our artillery. What about moats or ditches? The ground might be frozen but the dragons could probably dig shit up. The Dothraki could have taken out thousands just by attacking them from a distance with their bows and slowly falling back. And how about some boiling oil to empty on attackers scaling the walls? Very weak.

Best part of this series has been Bronn with the whores.

This is why you're my favourite poster on here.

You'd think there has to be a scene with her screaming "Burn them all" and then being murdered by Grayworm or someone. Futility of war, etc, etc

I'm wondering if either Dani or John will be standing at the end. Both have already died once and may very well be on borrowed time once they serve their purpose, whatever that may be. But who else can take the IT? Maybe Sansa? Gendry?

There is some absolutely vicious stuff appearing on fan videos about this season.
Some folk are really not impressed about how the downward slide has become an avalanche of poor plot devices.
Not surprising when years have been 'invested' in following the machinations and development to just throw it all away in six episodes.

There has to be a 'jump the shark' moment that we were all willing to waive away at the time as necessary.

The journey behind the wall to capture a wight and the bizarre time spans in the narrative were probably the most obvious but I guess that at the time this was viewed as a 'one-off' plot device. Nope, it was foreshadowing a long run of really dumb writing.

Ramsey Bolton was the last interesting storyline and once that finished the show has appeared to be in a race against itself.

The other really poor decision has been the misuse of the direwolves. Set up originally as a key (and cool) part of the show they were crazily cast aside as bit piece characters. Right from the early days when Arya's direwolf escaped there was opportunity to have them return to help out. Maybe that will still happen, and Ghost and Nyemeria will add to the battle, but it will seem like a complete afterthought and wasted storyline.

I think I want Cersei to win now. She is the only one who actually is intelligent. Dany or Jon winning after all the mistakes they have made just wouldn't make any sense. Neither is actually a good general. Can anyone think of an historical figure who actually won a series of wars after making such big fuck-ups? Doesn't anyone feel sorry for Robb Stark? He made a couple of minor mistakes and was killed for it. Dany and Jon get unlimited chances.

Those ballista were just a bit OP. Semi automatic. Recoiless. Presumably rifled as those bolts flew dead straight. Must have been gimballed as weren’t affected by pitching of the boat. 100 percent accurate at picking out high altitude moving targets. No ranging shots needed. But that could have been because the bolts were unaffected by gravity so no ballistic trajectory to worry about.

Stealth tech included on the ships too.

I can see why they weren’t too worried by all those ballista on KL at the end though. They would have hit Doorne before they hit a target 50 feet away. While she’s waiting for Jon Snow to arrive, Cersei should start raining artillery down on Winterfell.

Writing 8 seasons of awesome is really hard. That's why GRR is taking so fucking long with the books, he wants to get it right. Once the series overtook the books and the stuff directly after (when GRR was giving much more guidance) it al went downhill ie Hollywood. So I'm just trying to enjoy it as Hollywood - instant communication, teleportation, deus-ex-machina, ridiculous plot devices & armour, etc.

It's hard tho, such a come down.

If you get into military history you can see 90% of decisions made are fucking stupid, often from lack of clear information but often from preconceived notions or pride or whatever. So yeah, there are a lot of figures who won despite themselves!

That's very charitable of you, but everybody knows it's really because it's hard to type one-handed while the other one is constantly rewinding and replaying the early scenes of Dany and Missi

It was pretty amazing that this series even received the green light. There wasn't even an ending yet and the author himself was still unsure how to wrap it all up. Thumbs up for taking a massive risk that has paid off. Pity it's all gone to shit. I hope to God the fat perv finishes the books but I'm not holding my breath.

Btw, what happened to the knights of the Vale? Can't recall seeing either them or Lord Royce in the battle.
